rookie question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello everyone, I'm still new to the older chevy scene and I'm trying to buy a few things for my 71 c10 and need some help so I don't order the wrong things.

The truck is a 71 c10, 350 engine, and the turbo 350 trans, no modifications except an exhaust (stock headers), and an intake... so pretty much all stock.

I need a new alternator, starter, and if I can find it the wires coming off the alternator because they look like they have been pieced together by a child!

I'm pretty positive this alternator will fit http://www.jcwhitney.com/quality-bui...51327y1971g2j1

But which one of these starters will work? http://www.jcwhitney.com/quality-bui...51327y1971g2j1 I think the second one will (the $39 one) but please advise!

And I have contacted Painless performance to see if they can help me with the power wires since I don't want to/ or need to do any major chassis wiring at the moment, but I want to knock out this child's wiring in my engine bay.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I bought my starter and alternator at O'Reilly's.

I would buy those items at a local auto store , so if they are wrong it only take a little time to get the right parts, ordering from mail order or online for critical parts can put your vehicle parked in the driveway for a longer time

As others have already stated purchase those items locally. We all make mistakes, and if the guy boxing your order puts the wrong thing in the box you have a long wait ahead of you.

Since it is a small block Chevy 350, GM made millions of them and the parts are plentiful. I would go to a local source as opposed to mail order.

Mike: The wiring on these trucks are incredibly easy to figure out. Print out one of the wiring diagrams form this website and repair the wiring. I even have an extra printed wiring diagram if you want it. I'm in your area. I went through the same thing with the three trucks I've owned. Cleaning up the engine wiring harness (or any wiring harness on these trucks) makes a world of difference and you learn a lot seeing how things are laid out. Send me a PM and I'll give you my email address.

Just don't get the cheapest parts. Don't know if that's even an option at the local parts store. Note: Used to be Napa was not the place to get electrical components. Don't know if that's still the case.

You can get full maintenance, overhaul, and wiring schematics in searchable PDF on the site. I'd buy from a local would and have bought most of that from a local store also. I've gotten too many incorrect parts from web sites.
