Water Pump Clearance

I got this truck in pieces, so I'm not the one who took it apart. As far as I know this is the original water pump and motor. The water pump doesn't clear the timing cover without leaving a gap. Is something else supposed to go in there? It appears to fit on my 1-ton with the same engine. There is a mark on the back of the water pump, so it was obviously touching the timing cover. Should i just tighten the crap out of it and hope for the best?

Re: Water Pump Clearance

New gaskets should push it out. Mine did the same thing, I just cranked it down. Seemed fine.

Re: Water Pump Clearance

The gaskets may give you enough clearance or you can run thicker gaskets or grind down the heads of the bolts on the water pump cover a little bit for clearance. I am running an aluminum timing cover so I ground the bolt heads just enough to clear. Took them out one at a time.

Re: Water Pump Clearance

They sell a spacer that's about 1/8" thick to alleviate the problem. I don't remember where I got mine but it was a local parts store. Just need an extra set of gaskets to sandwich it all together

Re: Water Pump Clearance

just be aware if you start using spacers you could wind up with pulley misalignment issues so check that out before you have it permantly assembled...could just be aftermarket timing cover meets aftermarket water pump....and why are you installing a water pump where you have no idea if it leaks or not?
