No, it looks like at some point the plaid was replaced with fairly plain gray cloth. Haven't seen it in person yet, so it may be a completely new cover. All the rest of the parchment pieces appear to be there and in good shape though.

Yes, that's the one. Just got off the phone with him. He's sending me pictures of the rust that needs repaired so I can decide if I want to run down (about 100 miles from me) tomorrow to check it out. I'm afraid it may need more than I want to spend on one right now but we'll see. It'd be a cool unique truck if finished!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

So I think I'm picking up the black Highlander. Just need to coordinate someone to ride shotgun to go snag it up. Unless I get there and its way worse than expected, I'll have some pictures to post. He says he has the original sales materials from when it was purchased new as well, so I'm anxious to see those.

Thanks! I did bring it home last night. It's fairly rough, but has good bones and is really sound mechanically. I have to bring it into town from a friend's house this afternoon, so I'll try to post more info on it tonight. Need to go through the original sales docs and see what all is there as well. I know it was built in St Louis and sold in Murray, KY originally, and the protect-o-plate is there with the original manual and a bunch of other stuff.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Here's a few pics of the new truck and there's a link to the new hosted album in my sig... I included some shots of the original paperwork that came with the truck. Unfortunately I don't see a build sheet under the seat and there's no window sticker in with the paperwork.

Drove 100 miles last night to my friend's place and never missed a beat, but I started having what I think is a fuel starvation issue driving the dozen or so miles home this afternoon. Had to pull over twice in 12 miles. Never died, just felt starved after driving five or six miles at highway speeds. Fuel filter is clear and full when I pull over, so I'm guessing maybe a float? After pulling over for a minute it was fine again for a while. The Edelbrock on it is pretty gnarly looking and I'll probably replace it anyway. Also found a badly burnt plug wire on #5 after I got home. I'll replace all the wires and plugs this weekend and see how everything looks from there.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Cant wait to see it with the Highlander seat in it Is the vinyl ripped on the driver side? If the vinyl is in decent shape or just needs one panel, the rest of the seat looks pretty good. You can get the grey plaid material by the yard at SMS, an upholsterer could fix that right up.. the center scroll panels look good, that is the most important... SMS has the proper vinyl as well also sold my the yard.. the plaid is not cheap, but maybe cheaper than new covers... although with CarsInc doing them for 419 you can hardly get someone to fix what you have for that. I installed the covers myself, not really that hard, just need good hogring pliers and enough hogrings to do the job.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

The vinyl is in pretty good shape, but I can see where there's been a few repairs up on top (I don't think anything too noticeable) but the vinyl panels on the driver's end are pretty haggard:

Looks very fixable.. I would reach out to SMS and see if they have the grey in stock, sometimes they don't but usually have a timeline when they will weave new bolt.

I just got some gray this week, they have it in stock. It is a little darker than the factory gray, but it's all they have.

Can you share a pic? Maybe it is darker cause it is brand new?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Looks great. Good score. You can rebuild the edelbrock for around 40 bucks. I would run a couple bottles of fuel cleaner through as well just to be sure. You can also test the fuel pump. I can't remember but I believe there is a screen on the fuel inlet on the carb that you can unscrew the fitting and clean as well.
