99 yukon cough

Hi guys new to the forum. I am stumped. Rebuilt the engine in my 1999 Yukon. When I try to start it there is a cough through the throttle body. Not a backfire but a cough. I thought I had a sticky valve so I readjusted rockers and it cranked fine then it coughs through the intake. I am stumped. I have adjusted the rockers by the book and this time was told to adjust them with the nuts down .156 inches. Thanks in advanced.

Re: 99 yukon cough

Do you have it timed right?
#1 firing at tdc compression.
You could be off 180 degrees.

Re: 99 yukon cough

I lined up my dots on the timing set. I set the distributor at #1. I believe I am. I installed a new cap and rotor thinking they were bad. Same issue. I installed a new crank sensor. Now it cranks with no cough. I am getting fuel. It’s at 55 lbs. I think the book calls for 60. I will check my timing again to be sure. I am leaning towards a timing issue but not sure.

Dot to dot as in crank dot at 12 and cam dot at 6 is #6 tdc compression. To get to #1 tdc compression you need to turn the crank once. Then point rotor at #1.

I had it dot to dot for 1 tdc. After you said that I reread the book. I am 180 out I am pretty sure.

A '99 Yukon should have the L31 Vortec 350 (5.7) There is a specific procedure to installing the distributor.

Re: 99 yukon cough

Got it running. Thanks guys you are amazing. Ending up being 180 degrees out and then I lost spark. Found a broken pin on the crank sensor. Only took 3 hours of chasing wires. Lol. Now to button it up and drive it for the first time. Thank you again.
