Are adapters ideal? Or is there any other way to convert to 6 lug?

I don't think you'll find anywhere that makes a 5-lug to 6-lug conversion adapter. The lugs would overlap, making it pretty much impossible to do. To convert to 6-lug, you'd need to change out the rear axles and brake drums, and front hub/rotor assembly. Since there were no 6-lug 2WD trucks made in our generation, you'd have to source a place that makes custom hubs. I can't see any possible application where this would be worthwhile. If you want extra strength, convert to an 8-lug setup off of a 3/4 ton 2WD. 6-lug was only used on the 1/2 4x4 trucks.

Are you OK with the extra width? I'd rather change the font hub/rear axle if I knew I was going to leave it that way. Is this to mount a wheel not available in 5 lug?

I did some digging around, and there are adapters available to do this, but they are a two piece, bolt together design. You couldn't pay me enough money to put something like that on a truck that ever sees and harsh driving or towing (or even heavy loads for that matter). A 1-piece bolt through adapter should work just fine, but I would be very leery of anything that bolts together to go from 5 to 6 lugs like this:

If you'll notice, the big made in the U.S.A. wheel adapter companies won't build a lug adapting wheel adapter. There's a reason for this: they don't want the liability concerns for one of those things coming in two.

Like bruiser asked, why exactly are you wanting to change over?

Actually there are USA company's building these adaptors. I buy from them regularly. Excalibur is one of them. Adaptors like these are not my first choice and rather expensive for what they are. You would be better off to buy a set that fit or look into a hub swap.

I would never run a set of adapters like that... I actually did and am glad I switched them out before I had any trouble!

Agree, I was just wondering if it was possible just because there are many rims available for a 6 lug than 5 lug. But I will stick to my 5x5 lug pattern.

i think golden state or brothers has 6 lug rotors that will work about 150 or so

If you are running 1.25" Rotors, then you can get the disc brake conversion rotors for the 67-72 trucks from CPP. They are designed to fit squarebody 1.25" spindles. Then do the back as stated above.
