Need steering help fast please. - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I tried to install power steering today.
There are two types of couplers. And the old and new boxes have 2 diffrent diamater shafts / splines for the couplers. The new (Black shiney) box came with the small coupler (A shown), and the original was the more complex rag looking coupler. I tried to move the rag style (complex coupler) to the new power steering box, and it was too small dia. to fit over the shaft. When I tried to mate up with the coupler it came with there was a gap, and couldn't slide the steering part close enough to the box to take up the gap.
What should I do?

Oh yah. It's a 72 GMC 2wd 1/2 ton long bed /w a 350cid / TH350

What year is the new box? When I converted to p/s, I used a box from a 79 suburban. I used the rag joint from the 79. And then bolted the bottom of the coloum on my 69. Worked out great for me. Will the rag joint from your manual steering box work? I guess you could always get a rag joint from a bone yard.......

The power steering box does have a larger shaft than the manual box. Both styles of boxes use rag joints to connect it to the column. If you can't swap out the clamp portion, then you will have to find a correct one to use.

The guy I purchased it from online said it(the steering box) came off a 1970 C10 2wd. Darren

IT looks like the one on the left is a broken peice of a rag joint, thats why its not long enough to connect.the parts store carry's the new rag joints that or a trip to the wrecking yard.

There are different ways to discover things,lol. I found that power and non-power steering boxes differed when I swapped my 70 frontend for that of a 71. I then found out that the new pitman arm ('71 non-p/s) wouldn't fit the old steering box ('70 p/s). So I had to pull my old pitman and install it onto the new drag link.

Wow! I hope I don't run into any pitman problems. Oh! By the way! Also, the front of the steering box hit the front bumper brace. I had to remove the brace to install the new steering box. Did they make diffrent braces for PS VS nonPS trucks? It doesn't seem to hit by much. Maybe 1/2 inch. Should I find the correct brace? Or just cut/grind the current one? Darren

Yes, there were different braces. Cut it, it'll be fine.
