Go to the salvage yard and buy a pair of '86-'96 Dodge Dakota pickup door weatherstrips, push them on, cut three inches off of the end and you are done. No glue, no mess, no fuss. If you look you can find some nice ones for under 10 bucks.... Take a Phillips screwdriver, small hammer and a small pry bar with you to get them off.

Oh and don't lose the rubber inserts where the ends of the seal fit together.

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

if you have the glue on type go buy the glue from ford. i don't have the part number. its green in color and motorcraft brand. comes in a can with a screw lid and brush. don't waste time with the stuff from 3m marketed in stores. takes too long. i am sure you will get all kinds of better suggestions but they never used it I bet

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

I watched a show and they had Steele Parts guy showing that the best way to install the seals was to use 3m products and spray down the door area and let it get tacky first, then apply it to the seal and attach it to the cab and hold it in place.

The only problem with that is, if you don't get it in the right position before it makes contact you may tear it trying to get it back loose to move it. Having to get it over the lip around the door opening makes it tough to do. Definitely easier with two people.

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

I bought 2 dozen of the clips at Office Max. And the other stuff (if it's the yellow/orange crud) at the auto parts store.

I'm gonna try the Dodge Dakota door thing next time....Sounds like more fun.

For me, the key is, "...a little at a time". "Do one door and do the other tomorrow".

YMMV, because we all want to get it all done at once, right?

Caterpillar has what sounds like the same stuff. Green in a can with a brush. I dont remember what the name is but we call it green glue. It is some wicked stuff, and near impossible to get off even your hands. Works great for weatherstripping. It also works good for gasket adhesive where you dont want the gasket to move during assembly.

I've always liked the 3M black weatherstrip adhesive. It works pretty well on gaskets, too.

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

we have tried all the stuff mentioned above through the years and he asked for the best. The ford or possibly the cat stuff is the way to go. 3m is crap compared to the motorcraft. its just more popular and easily found in stores so people reccomend it.

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

I've always used 3M because that's the the type of thing they do. At one time they were the ones who supplied automakers. The option was always something else inferior, going back 30 or more years. But,through this thread I have learned, from people who know what they're talking about, that there is a better adhesive (topic of discussion) and even a better weatherstrip. I use the 3M weatherstrip adhesive for all sorts of things. It's great been stuff that I always keep in my toolbox. I'll have to try that Ford adhesive.

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will try the green can stuff from Ford if I can find it. In the past I have used the yellow stuff from 3M I think and always had trouble getting it to stick and always made a mess.

Also bought the push on ones from GMC Pauls. They worked great. Just put the seam under the sill plate.

Side note... why is the front 3 inches missing from the window weather strip anyway?

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

Yes our push on door seals we carry install without the use of any adhesive. They can be installed, removed, & reinstalled repeatedly without problems or having to worry about them coming free on their own.

Re: Best adhesive for door weatherstrip?

Thanks Leon !!

After reading your tip on Dakota seals, I went down to the U Pick It and for a total investment of $6, I now have seals that do their job.

I actually have to slam the door shut now.

Thanks again.
