What a difference a couple years make for parts and scrap

Started looking at cleaning up and simplifying my pile of squares. Sold a couple, basically got my money back out of the beaters.

Looked at my scrap pile, including a lot of rusted panels, etc. Probably time to take off the topper and haul a load. Looked at the pricing at the big yard in Saginaw, MST (mixed steel scrap) -$ no value!! Quite a change from even last year! Some value in aluminum, copper and cast iron still. But at $135/ton I'll use my 366 block as a counterweight for my tractor.

Looking at selling my parts pile, figured 'Hey I'll throw some stuff on CL and see'. Not one bite, even on the A833's.

On the other hand I answer a CL ad and pick up some Texas doors and fenders reasonable (not cheap), and some beautiful K20 steelies. And recently a couple nice frames have showed up. But is seems like the normal used parts market has kind of dried up unless you have NOS metal.

How does it look in your area?

I've always got people asking about the A833's.

I'll make sure and send them your way.

Re: What a difference a couple years make for parts and scrap

I do a lot of scrap with my towing business. as of last week ( and it goes down every week) I was getting $3.50 per hundred pounds. Luckily I deal with an honest scrap yard and they don't charge me for tires, oil, gas, and motor fluids. In addition I am paid $8 per battery $7 per aluminum wheel and they pay extra for catalytic converters so for example on a recent run with two junk cars one being a 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee and a 96 VW Passat, I was able to bring $591, which was a decent half days pay on a $170 investment... both vehicles had aluminum rims and I had some extra so a total of11 rims 3 batteries and cats.. About a year ago that same load woulda been close to $950

I just hauled a load out to my local scrap yard in my '72 c30 and told them if they helped me unload it they could have it. I don't have a hoist on it. I don't think they even wanted to do that, but I buy some new steel from them once in a while and get my tanks for my welder and torch there so they did.

Re: What a difference a couple years make for parts and scrap

Scrap prices so low here that the scrap yards look like parking lots...
I thought it was just a local thing...a big company (SA recycling) came here about 2 yrs ago and bought every scrapyard there was...immediately cut prices in half...and been dropping ever since...

Our scrap prices just about pay for the gas to haul metal to the scrap yard...

Re: What a difference a couple years make for parts and scrap

A local junk yard owner says he loses money scrapping now days due to the labor, oxy gas and transporting costs. It costs him less to let it sit out there and rust away.

Re: What a difference a couple years make for parts and scrap

China used to be a big importer of our metals. The major drop in scrap per ton coincides w/the recent friction in DC.

$20 per ton for cars and trucks here right now. Hardly worth hauling anything.

Re: What a difference a couple years make for parts and scrap

LKQ bought our local junk yard in town and they buy all scrap. The scrap yard I always use for aluminum, copper, and brass is up the hiway 20 miles. I only go there for that, but for scrap metal lately I take it to the place that's close. Just today I took a little bit from tidying up. Weighing in I told the guy I didn't care about the money, asked if he needed me to weigh out, or could I just head out. That was fine with him.

It does seem like people aren't buying as much lately. People say Facebook Marketplace is where to go, Craigslist is dead. Well, could be that's the reason right there. If I want to buy or sell something I'll use both and others! So I tried both, listing the same things, and have done better with Craigslist. I've had a ton of talk on FB, and got likes. After all, it's Facebook. But haven't sold anything off of there yet. Every now and then I get asked something that's posted in the ad. I think the economy is a kinda soft right now.

I'd appreciate it. Knees telling me automatics only and I hate to see these lay around.

Re: What a difference a couple years make for parts and scrap

It cost me $20 to unload that little bit of scrap the other day that I wasn't worried about the money for. Yep, yesterday I get to my job and about an hour later I noticed the right rear was really low on air. So, it actually cost me a day's wage as well. I aired it up, went back home, removed, saw screw in tread, ran up the hiway to truck tire place, fixed, back home with a few afternoon hours to work around my place. When I was at the junk yard I was thinking, "Watch me get a flat out of this deal". I must be a clairvoyant or something
