Big Blocks In 67 - 72 C10/C20?
Were big blocks available in 67 - 72 Chevy C10 or C20 trucks? My 67 Suburban sales brochure shows no big blocks available for 67, but I have a sales brochure for 72 Chevy trucks that shows a "400" engine available that shows it has 402 C.I.

Yes they were.....not sure all years but don't see why it. Friend bought 71/72 3/4 ton factory 402/th400, 60 rear posi a/c and it rotted out for being a New York truck.

My Longhorn had a 402 BBC, my buddy had a 69 3/4 with a 396. Not sure about 'burbs.

Yes. Not Terribly uncommon. Only in Two wheel drive. '67 is a bit of a one off - perhaps in 67 you couldn't? These were 396s at first and then they overbored it to 402 I think?

Re: Big Blocks In 67 - 72 C10/C20?
In 1970 and 71 the engine was marketed as a 396, but were actually 402 C.I. as the bore was 0.032" larger than the 4.094" bore of the 396. Then in 72 they were called 402's. I don't know what GM was playing at there. I seem to recall back then that the story was that there was some problems with the early 402 engines, and GM called them 396 C.I. so buyers didn't know they were getting the 402 engine. But, who knows how stories get started?

For whatever reason all Big Block trucks were badged as a "400" regardless if they had a 396 or a 402 in them.

I love going to car shows and hearing guys argue over whether their engine is a 396, 400 or 402.

Re: Big Blocks In 67 - 72 C10/C20?
The big block was available starting in '68. In '68-'69 it would have been a 396 and '70-'72 would be a 402.

Here's a scan from a '72 sales brochure showing the engine options. Even though this is a GM Canada brochure, can I assume the selection was the same as in the US?

They came out in 1970, ended in 1980. IMO, best small block out there. They were available in cars and trucks. Cars I think went to the mid 70s if not earlier, but trucks up to '80. I should have bought it, 1980 1 ton Chevy 400, 4-speed, 205, 60 front, 14ff rear and 4.56s. It was like 20+years ago, bought thinking it was $500, needed some work...never saw it again....

Re: Big Blocks In 67 - 72 C10/C20?
I have no idea when the 400 small blocks were produced but they never were factory installed in a 67-72 light duty truck. Trucks had Small block 283, 307, 327, 350 and big block 396 and 402s.

Re: Big Blocks In 67 - 72 C10/C20?
Why were they not available in trucks when cars could get a 400 or even a 402?
