What vehicle did this come from?

Picked up an 8.1 engine from a salvage guy, wondering what it might have came out of? He says its from a 2003 chevy pickup but some things about it dont seem like a pickup motor. It is set up for propane. Has a big oil cooler on it. Full length sump oil pan. I think they included the whole wiring harness from whatever vehicle it came from!

Hoping to convert it back to gas, maybe its as easy as different injectors and rails?

Re: What vehicle did this come from?

Those engines were available in 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups, a few years ago. They were not around for long. After those engines, there were no longer big block engines for Chevy pickups!
I don't know what type of dealership connections you have, you might ask for someone that has a gas powered pickup to give you their VIN number, it might help tell what it takes to convert to gas.
Those engines are 495 cubic inches. They are big blocks, but entirely unique to themselves for almost all parts. LS engine technology came into play in their design.
Would make a cool hod rod deal!, some folks have what it takes to figure all this out, I am not one of them...
Hope you can make it go!!!

Maybe. I do know they use a LS 411 ecu so reprogramming it for gas shouldn’t be an issue.

Re: What vehicle did this come from?

The 8.1 is still being made and is used with LP for industrial/ag/powergen use all over the world, they just aren't being made by GM. The castings/patents were sold under license to a company in Illinois that produces them. Newer versions exist in 8.1 and 8.8 versions for things like schoolbusses

"Why isn't that thing in the bed of a crew cab truck??"

Thats a good question. O wait, it is, lol. I knew I should have cropped that pic before I posted it, haha. I started stripping the wiring off it last night, will post a clean up pic when I get done.

"Go get the other 2 and flip them"

It would be my luck that if I did that I would be stuck with them.

It's not built by gm anymore, but it still resembles the 8.1. It's got a nice torque curve(or lack of one), it's a straight line.
