NP 205 Vs. Rockwell T221

From what I have found out, it appears that in 1969 both of these transfer cases were available in Chevy/GM trucks. My question is was this some sort of mid-year change or were there specific applications where one was used instead of the other?

Mid year change, but the 221 was never offered behind an automatic trans. '69 was the first year you could get an automatic 4X4 from GM.

Re: NP 205 Vs. Rockwell T221

I found out yesterday that Chevy started using the NP 205 in 1967 while GMC continued with the Rockwell through 1969.

They did?? I don't believe that is correct. Both my 68 and 69 are Chevy and both have Rockwells.

Not saying it's the Gospel, just what one publication I ran across said.

It was incorrect. The NP205 was first made in 1969.

My GMC originally had a Rockwell behind a 465 but hands down the 205 is a better t-case in every conceivable way.

I believe that it was a NP202 that was also used in 67 - 68; a 205 came out in 69

I found this not to long ago and if memory serves me , I saw this on an earlier thread here that had a lot of info on transfer cases and adapting to automatics. it was quite an extensive thread. maybe it goes to say that one shouldn't take for granted what is quoted in these forums.
I do run an independent 205 in my 64 behind a 5 spd. my 205 came out of an IHC Scout and also had one from a dodge(just the yokes are different) but both are r/side mount

My truck is the same as MSGROSS. It has a sm465 tranny and a 221 rockwell transfer case. Almost forgot but it is a 68 chevy.

Re: NP 205 Vs. Rockwell T221

I have yet to see an NP205 in anything older than a 1969, not saying it didn't happen, just haven't seen one.

can't you tell by the way the stick is, a 205 is more to the passenger side of the hump, and a rockwell is on the driver's side of the hump, and my rockwell shifts different, also

Early GM 205 applications had a shifter that bent over the top of the adapter and came up on the drivers side. This may have been '69 - '70 only.

Re: NP 205 Vs. Rockwell T221

Will a Chevy NP205 bolt up to an SM465 in place of a T221?
