Painting plastic inner door panels

I need black panels for the doors of my 72 K-10, and my originals are in nice shape, except that they are green (Parchment?)

Is it possible to paint these panels, and have them hold up? I was planning on using a matte finish black spray that says it's for plastic, but I hate to ruin a perfectly good pair of panels if it won't work. I've been searching for some good black panels, but so far, no luck

Yes . You can recolor your door panels and have it any color you want use plastic adhesion promoter called Bulldog . after serious dawn dish detergent cleaning and using a wax and grease remover you spray the panels lightly with BULLDOG and the use any sem or plasticoat plastic color dye you want available at most auto parts stores .

Re: Painting plastic inner door panels

Bulldog adhesion promoter and either krylon "fusion" satin black or sem landau black.

*Clean panels with dish soap and a tire brush or toothbrush to get all the grain clean

* spray mist coats of adhesion promoter (after panels are dry) with 10-15 minute intervals

*spray plastic dye (sem brand or krylon) in mist coats approximately 15-25 min after last adhesion promoter coat.
(Key here is mist coats, dusting of color. Don't do one heavy coat. The less coats the better for adhesion and better results.

By the way, your panels are medium green, parchment is a off white color. Trevor

Re: Painting plastic inner door panels

SEM paint bonds to plastic great when prepared properly. Have you considered maybe trading a board member? Maybe someone here is looking to swap panels.

If you are using black, I have had excellent results with Mar-Hyde brand spray. I've used it on vinyl seats as well and it does not come off.

Re: Painting plastic inner door panels

Thanks for all of the tips. I cleaned them up, first scrubbing with Purple Power, then a strong concentration of Dawn and water then some wax and grease remover. I haven't picked up the paint yet, but will be sure to clean them again before painting

Re: Painting plastic inner door panels

PPG has a system for plastic prep that is the best I have used. If you look at their One Choice system they have plastic prep that has a cleaner/scuff as step 1 then a adhesion wipe as step 2 followed by adhesion spray. This system will cost about $30 and will make other products stick like factory paint.

Re: Painting plastic inner door panels

Ive had good results useing simple green to clean , bulldog as an adhesion promoter , and sem vinyl dye as the top coat , use a very light application of bulldog , it goes a long way
