Distributor connector - clean the contacts or leave alone?

Cleaning up this distributor to put on a new engine and thought to clean the metal tabs in the connector but dont want to screw things up. Is there a simple way to remove them and clean them and pop them back in or should I leave it be?

I'd use anything from CLR followed by a good water flush to electrical contact cleaner to coating it up with a silicone dielectric grease. Contact would still be made despite the grease and it would be protected from further corrosion.

Hey Vince and thanks for the tip! I was wondering though if I should attempt to pop out the connectors from that black plastic housing and clean each separately. Not sure if its necessary but seemed like the best way to get it cleaned.

Re: Distributor connector - clean the contacts or leave alone?

I saw this video and followed it and it turned out pretty good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkw_52rFHU8

I just left the connector as is and dunked it in the vinegar/salt solution and then used the smaller pipe cleaner from the cleaning kit I have for the airgun and then dunked it in the water/baking soda solution and coated with dielectric grease. Onto the next deal now.

If that were mine I would have sprayed it with Deoxit and left it alone.

Now you don’t know if that Vinegar and Salt solution wicked up under the wire’s insulation.

Just like me to leap and then look. Well the guy in the video did the dunk in the water/baking soda bath to neutralize the vinegar/salt which I did do but thats water in the wiring jacket now. Dang.

This is where your wife's hair drier comes in handy.

I don’t think baking soda neutralizes salt.

Good luck.
