4-speed: Shift boot? No shift boot? I'm confused

My K10 is a bit of a cobble, and one of the things cobbled about it is the transmission cover and the boots for the transmission and transfer case levers. As you can see - even in this picture I took for some other reason - the PO installed aftermarket shifter boots for both levers.



Both boots were perished so when I took the cover off to replace the clutch a few months back, I tossed the boots.

After pouring over pages of build and picture threads, I haven't found a definitive answer on this topic. It seems that there is some sort of boot for the transfer case lever, but is there supposed to be something over the end of the shifter, or is there just a tight opening in the tunnel cover for the shifter?

I have not seen a transfer case boot. Not that there isn't one, just haven't seen it. there are more knowledgeable experts that may chime in.

It seems strange, but to the best of my knowledge no boot was used inside the cab for the 4 speed lever. A boot or grommet of sorts was installed between the trans and floor hump though. These rubber grommets degrade with age and fall apart, so now it often appears that they had nothing there at all.
The original grommet on my 46K mile Suburban actually turned to goo and slowly ran down both sides of the tranny. It looked like tar.

There was a transmission boot in my 60 k-20 when I got it, but don't know for certain it was there when it was new

I can't find a part number listed in any of my parts books. Just the foam donut between the removable floor section and the transmission cover. My transfer case opening was a flat rubber about an 1/8" thick with two slits aposing each other where each shift setting is located.

The pictures of the really original trucks don't seem to have boots, but the pictures never focus on this particular element. My tunnel is still out, so now would be the time to patch the hole in it.

My Dad back in 65/66 bought a new c20 3/4t 292 with a 4speed and it had no boot just the rubber mat with a hole in it for the trans sticking up.

No boot ever in mine since there were no holes drilled in the trans cover. There was a little of the original foam seal in place so that is what I decided to use. I eventually found one on ebay. Here is an image. The aftermarket foam seal is crap and won't fit. The aftermarket boots are to tight around the shifter and will split very quickly, plus the chrome trim ring is cheesy IMHO.

Please excuse the body shop dust, I used a Mr Gasket boot for the transfer case shifter. The metal ring isn't correct, the OEM boot had the ring molded into the rubber like Mitch's photo. I'm almost certain the factory boots were installed "upside down" hope this helps
