Should I replace the ring and pinion
I have a ‘63 c10 with the 12 bolt with a 17 spline pinion. The pinion bearing went bad, it wobbles all over. I’m pulling it all apart to do a complete rebuild and upgrade to 5 lug 30 spline axles. It’s a 3.73 which I’m happy with, it’s never made any noise and driven fine until the bearing went out and I got a vibration from it. If I find that the ring and pinion is in good shape am I ok to keep using it? Or should I buy an aftermarket 30 spline Ring and pinion. Just wanted suggestions from those that have ‘been there and done that’. Thanks.

Re: Should I replace the ring and pinion
I would inspect that r&p really good...if its bad and with all your wanting to do your probably gonna be cheaper to swap the entire axle out...if your not familiar with settimg r&p backlash and have to pay to have it done plus all the other items on your list it could get pricey...

It will probably have a sing to it if you use those gears regardless how good they look.
I'm with Mongo. It will be cheaper to get a salvage axle. |

Re: Should I replace the ring and pinion
Once the pinion bearing went bad it will wear the ring and pinion with a new pattern and not a very good one. When you put it all back together you will find you cant get a good pattern on it. I would jut find another rear in good shape and go from there. Yu will be money ahead.

Re: Should I replace the ring and pinion
If time and/or money is an issue, a used differential is not a bad idea. The only one that will be a direct bolt in would be another '63 or a '64 truck 12 bolt. A '65-'72 truck 12 bolt has a different panhard bar mount.
Now if you have the time and money and want to do it right to last a long time, rebuild the '63 12 bolt you have. Yes I would go with a new ring and pinion.

Re: Should I replace the ring and pinion
Thanks for all the responses. I’m on a budget but it seems the only right way to do this is to replace the ring and pinion as well. I’d rather rebuild it myself for the learning experience.

Re: Should I replace the ring and pinion
Here is one thread from the FAQ section for you to read through. Unfortunately the photobucket pics aren't visable unless you have one of the programs that bypasses that.
