Sping Eye Pin - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Can any give me advice on how to remove the spring eye pins from the rear suspension of a 1951 3/4? I've removed the retaining pins but I'm not seeing how the pins can be removed? I found a clearance hole in the frame and tried to beat the front pin out without any luck. I would like to replace both the spring eye pin and the spring bushings. Picture with arrows attached.

Looks like I can use the grease zert threads and some sort of slide hammer according to the service manual.

A good bolt with the same threads as the zerk with something (maybe a ring) welded on the head should work with a slide hammer to pull it out or if you can get to the back side you might be able to drive it out.

Aren't those pins threaded into the bushing in the spring?

see #8 and #9 IIRC the bushings are threaded inside, the pins have screw threads on the outside to match. the pins have a small tapered spot where the shackles fit. there are nuts on the outside that keep the tapers tight. I think once you have the shackles off you can grab the pins and screw them out. I think I used Vise-Grips. There must be better drawings somewhere.

My truck is a 3/4 ton. According to my reasearch these pins shouldn't be threaded.

Same setup. I'm just not sure how they slide out without BFH and curse words.

Pins screw out #4, the bushings #6 will need heat and a BFH.

are you replacing the pins and bushings or you just wanna take them apart for some reason? if replacing just take a look at the new stuff, the pin is threaded and unscrews if i remember correctly. if the pin is just smooth possibly cut it off, with a thin zip disc, just inside the bracket next to the spring leaves. then the spring will fall out and you can deal with the rest in a press or at least get a better swing at it and not have to worry about breaking the spring hanger bracket.

Correct. 3/4 and 1 ton are NOT threaded like the 1/2 ton, and come out with a slide hammer screwed into the zerk hole. 3/8-24 bolt will work

If you don't have access to a slide hammer you might be able to get it out using a 3/8 stud with 3/8 24 threads on one end and longer threads on the other end. Screw the stud into the pin, put a large enough socket over the stud so the pin will pull up inside the socket, put washers on it and use a good nut and put the nut on and tighten the nut to pull the pin out. You would have to use a deeper socket or piece of pipe when you pulled it out a ways but you should be able to pull it out that way. You can probably rent/borrow a slide hammer at Autozone though.

You need to use a punch and a hammer or a porta power and push the pins out from the inside of the frame. There is a hole in the frame for this purpose. A slide hammer rarely works.

Wow, I didn't know 1/2 and 3/4 ton were different.

Good luck with however you try it. If it moves but won't come out try prying or jacking up the spring. sometimes there are lips worn into stuff, can be real hard to get out.

I see the holes, I'll try a bigger hammer! I had a hunch that those holes might be there for that purpose.

You do have that pin #7 in the drawing out? I am sure you do but I have seen guys in the past try to beat pins out that didn't take the retaining pin out first.

I've followed behind far too many that tried to beat the screwed in pins out of the 1/2 ton trucks too.

Yeah the smaller lock pins have been removed.

I do have a pretty decent selection of hammers ranging from an 8 oz ball peen to a 10 lb sledge that is shaped like my 2-1/2 lb machinists hammer that has been my go to bfh for 45 years.

Don't laugh too loud. Back in '84 I tried to beat the kingpins out of my 57. I didn't know about those little tapered pins in there. Half the county learned a bunch of new words that day. Finally pulled the axle, took it to a machine shop. Old timer reached out with his pocket knife scraped the thick built up grease off the pin. Quoth he: "I think you'll have better luck if you take this lock pin out first" oof.
