Help identify C20 rear end

How is everyone? First post other than the welcome intro. So, the guy I bought this truck off told me the rear end will eventually need replaced; it makes a noise when you drive. It doesn’t affect the drivability, I’d just like to get it replaced. I did a fair amount of reading on the different rear ends in these trucks and am unsure what I have. I don’t want to pull the cover off just to count the gears and look for the stamp. Some people on here seemed savvy enough to identify it with the cover still on. I’d love to hear what you think it is.

What gear ratios would work? Not sure how many were made in the HO52.

that might have 10 bolts on the cover but do NOT mix it up with a 10 bolt gm style rear axle . 2 different units by far and wide .

sad part is almost nothing for the eaton ho axle family anymore . there stock i heard rare 3.73 most were 4.56 or some 4.10 and some rear 5.12 or 5.13 i think .

if you want newer better options and still 8 bolt if that what you have find a 14ff from the 70'-90's trucks vintage and weld on new spring perches and shock mounts .

or if you want disc brake rear later find a 00's up rear with factory disc brake and swap that and be done minus metric lug nut threads on the studs .

I would like to swap to disc eventually down the line. Sounds like I should just wait till the rear quits completely or when I have time to do a big project and swap the axles to something newer. Thank for the feedback all.

Re: Help identify C20 rear end

The most common gear ratio I have found in the Eaton H)52/72's is 4.57. There was a 4.10 option, but I have seen only a couple of those. I would not put any money into that differential. I would also recommend looking for a 10.5" 14 bolt. I do make trailing arm mounts specifically for the 14 bolt, when the time comes that you need some.

Thanks, I did see your name in a different thread speaking about rear ends. I guess I’ll do my due diligence and research swaps when the time comes. I think for now I am going to leave as is and work on other things and do some research on what works. I’ll look into the 10.5”, 14 bolt swap.
