HI I found this 1971 GMC Longhorn Sierra Grand Costume Special Camper the dam thing is fully loaded and I know GMC trucks are quite a bit more rare than chevy. Now I know if it had the bucket seats it would just be the full package but cerious how rare these trucks are. I am usually a short box fan but this truck is so cool almost too long ha ha ha! The guy wants to trade for my Suburban which has the tach, bucket seats, 400 big block and tilt stearing the only thing it doesn't have from factory is the a/c. The suburban is a 1971 tail gate other doors which is also lower production numbers. So should I do the trade?

Re: trade or not?

I don't know if that's an even trade but personally I wouldn't. I like your suburban better. I'm like you in that I prefer short boxes. If it was a short box, I then would consider a trade.

Re: trade or not?

I think it all depends on which one you will use and enjoy more. I'm sure others will chime in about which one might be worth more.. I kinda think the Suburban might be worth more. If I didn't have a big camper too haul or a race car I wouldn't have much use for the Suburban..

Re: trade or not?

Stick with the suburban but keep an eye and track the GMC.
See what else the guy might want or need depending on where he lives and what he does.
The longhorns are a bit of an oddity and don't quite command the same money as some of the other models....unless you find someone who is really hunting for one.
Plus....the body condition is a very big issue....you don't want something rusted out throughout the lower end, optioned or not.
As mentioned by Shinysideup...yours looks to be more solid.
My two bits.

Re: trade or not?

I sure wish my swb was a lwb or even the 9 foot long bed.

I love Suburbans and would love to have one with barn doors.

My dad taught me "never trade." I have only traded once in my life, a Marlin 30.30 for a Czech Mauser with Lion crest. I have never fired the thing.

From about the 1 to 2 O'clock view, my swb truck looks like the cab and engine area is much too large for the bed. Longer truck beds means it's easier to me to haul longer boards. Trucks are made for hauling brother.

Re: trade or not?

I'd keep the suburban, generally speaking most people are going to offer you something worth less than what you have. For example when I was trying to sell my truck I had priced at 8k this guy tried to trade me a beat up 73 nova. After I told him I wasn't interested I saw it posted on Craigslist for $5,000. I sold my truck for my asking price a few weeks later.

I wouldn't use one of these older trucks for work so the long or short bed for hauling isn't an issue. I would not want a scratch once it was all done. But that's just me

Re: trade or not?

Ok so I am gonna keep the burb for sure but is that old longhorn worth buying? My brother wants it now he saw it and wants to buy it but with the options it has is that pretty near fully loaded?

Re: trade or not?

Good idea on keeping the burb. If you have a family, or plan to have one, it's a lot easier to go to a show in a burb than a truck.

This is just me talking, but if I was looking at both vehicles on craigslist, I would be in the range of 7-8K for your burb and about $3,500 on the truck (but given your location, your apparently rust free burb might be worth quite a bit more up there!).

Yes, that's my restored one (not really Photoshopped) in the picture. So I must feel that way. Doesn't mean its true, but I think so!

Re: trade or not?

Personally I wouldn't even consider that trade. No matter how many options the GMC has. If you are thinking collectability these trucks while getting better still aren't muscle car collectible. And the longhorn is probably pretty low on the totem pole of collectability of our trucks.

That's a nice truck restored!
I wouldn't let that Sub go though. I would like both.
I joined the "Shoulda Coulda Woulda" Club when I got rid of my 66 Chevelle. Never again I say.
