86 k10 fixes

Hey guys I have a 86 k10 with what I guess is a leaking seal between the transfer case and transmission it won't move unless you put more transmission fluid in it. It has a 350\th350 not sure what the transfer case is as I just got the truck. What's the simplest way to fix this and can someone walk me through it? Then the rear spider gears are welded and the fuel gauge doesn't work i was told the sending unit was replaced and worked for a bit then stopped working again. What's the best solutions for these fixes? I'm not replacing the axle mind you.

Re: 86 k10 fixes

if its the trans leaking your gonna have to split the transmission and transfer case and replace the seal..might as well change the transfer case seal while your in there..

for welded spider gears your gonna have to replace the differential depending on how it was welded..it would need to be setup correctly...it would be much easier to just swap out the complete rear axle..

on the fuel gauge issue start by checking the wiring

I assume you are putting ATF in the transmission? Can you see that it is leaking between the trans and TC? You likely have a NP208 transfer case. As mongocanfly said regarding the rear differential, it will be easiest and cheapest to replace the entire differential. If you do not have the tools and skill to setup a differential with a new carrier, gears and bearings, and you have to pay to have it done, you are looking at around $1000-1200 to have your original rebuilt.

Yeah my wife's grandfather that's giving me the truck told me it's leaking between the transmission and transfer case, I believe we put in about a gallon of atf before it would move otherwise it wouldn't budge. He wants to help me with the axle so we are doing that
