Powermaster LT1 Starters

I'm about to buy an LT1 starter (mini starter) for my '72 K2500 350 w/full-length headers. Yes, I am having starter failure issues due to header heat. It's odd because this truck is the only one to give me issues from headers, and I've run headers on my trucks since... Well, a very long time. I've had these headers on the truck since '04 and all was fine for many of those years. It's been every couple summers with the last few.

Has anyone used a Power Master starter? Interested in info on others as well. I'm about to get something, was thinking buy new OEM type, like Remy, but wonder about other minis.

I get the starter from a 1998 c2500 454. Uses a different bolt.
But will start an angry sbc with 36° initial timinh like nothing

I just started to search some before posting this and saw some later tuck listings come up. Are those small body? I know they are reduction/spin faster than what these trucks did. What about the different bolt, you just mean the orig. won't work, need shorter or whatever?

special-K...if the current starter is still working but fails when subjected to heat soak, try wrapping both the starter (especially the solenoid) and the header tubes with as much heat wrap as you can get in there...

The smaller low profile starters will suffer from the heat soak as well...it wasn't until I spent the time to wrap all components with heat wrap that the issues went away...trust me...its no fun having a blown 468 RAT that wont start hot...

I replaced the starters on my 89 K30 and my girlfriends 93 pace truck. I used the new style factory "mini" starter. I get the bolts at the wrecking yard. They make a big difference inthe heat soak on both of them and they sound great too.

I have a powermaster mini on my 72, has worked flawlessly for over five years now, fires the big block right up and sounds cool to boot. They have great customer support as well.

After the oem disintegrated on my 68 I replaced it with another oem but wrapped it and the solenoid with heat shield. It has worked flawlessly for over three years now.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Good to hear the Powermaster is working well. I needed to beef up the starting system in my Harley when I put the custom-built S&S motor in.

Good to know the options on starters. I know heat wrap works but I don't like to deal with it. The extra space given by the small bodied starters does seem to be the difference. Like I said, I never had this problem on any oter truck and not this one till lately, and that's with stock starter. It could be crappy rebuilds. It's always long enough that I can't find my receipt
