Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

The L05 is the same engine as in my '89.

Here's info from Wiki.....

Quote:
The L05 was introduced in 1987 for use in Chevrolet/GMC trucks in both the GMT400 (introduced in April 1987 as 1988 models) and the R/V series (K5 Blazer, Suburban, and rounded-era pickups formerly classed as the C/K until 1986 which includes chassis cabs and 4-door crew cabs) L05s were first used in passenger cars in 1989 with the Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 police package (the L05 was not available on the standard (civilian) Caprice and Caprice Classic).

Although usage was for trucks, vans, and 9C1-optioned Caprices, the L05 was also used with the following vehicles:

1992/1993 Buick Roadmaster sedan and station wagon
1991/1992 Cadillac Brougham (optional engine)
1993 Cadillac Fleetwood
1992/1993 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon (optional engine)
1993 Chevrolet Caprice LTZ
1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser Wagon (optional engine)
L05 usage was replaced by the GM LT1 after 1993 in GM B-Bodies until production ceased in 1996.

In mid 1996 the L05 was equipped with Vortec heads used in the 1996 G30.
Nothing HO about it. Maybe he's thinking "HO" cause it was part of the 9C1 police package.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Learn more every time I come back here!

I'll tell you one thing though, it had real snappy throttle-response. It was only in park, but it seemed like you just touched the gas and it shot up to around 1500-2000 rpm.
Are all the TBI's like that? I haven't really driven this era FI truck. I don't remember my '98 K2500 being that snappy and my '06 doesn't seem that snappy either. But when I get my PCM back on Monday maybe I'll think differently...

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

This is interesting. My truck is a 1989 K1500, but it has these codes:

BYP SALES, SPORT EQUIPMENT PACKAGE
D44 MIRROR, O/S, PAINTED
MGS TRANSMISSION, MAN 5 SPD, GETRAG, 84MM, 4.00 1ST
MM5 MERCHANDISED TRANS, MAN 5 SPD PROVISIONS
NK3 STEERING WHEEL, SPORT, SOFT RIM, SIMULATED LEATHER
NZZ SALES PACKAGE, SKID PLATEOFF ROAD SPOT
PF4 WHEEL,16X7, ALUMINUM
V43 BUMPER RR, STEP, PAINTED
V76 HOOK, TOW
YED CONVENIENCE PKG, COMFORT & DECOR LEVEL #3 (Silverado pkg?)
Z71 CHASSIS PACKAGE, OFF-ROAD
18U PRIMARY COLOR, EXTERIOR SLATE GRAY

It now has the regular black single pedestal type mirrors, but it has had a fifth wheel hitch, and there is evidence that the mirrors were removed.

Both bumpers are body color, but the truck has been repainted (red)

The grille is painted red also, but is chrome underneath, and I think it's been changed.

So it has the sport package?, came with painted mirrors, and is a K series, L05 350 TBI engine, granny gear 5 speed, Z71. What's up with that?

edit: Oh yeah, there are no black/red moludings on the truck, bumper or body. No mouldings at all.

I don't really think it is a Sport, just reading and trying to interperet the SPO's.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

TennesseeZ,

I think the Sport Package evolved over the years, and started in 1989 with black mirrors. Maybe all the mouldings were optional like in the rest of the truck line.

It would be nice to find some original GM literature where the Sport Package is explained.........like a 1989 showroom brochure, for example.

With a BYP on your sticker, I'd say yours is a Sport.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Here's a pic of mine. Evidently it is a Sport, altho I had doubts when this thread first posted. After seeing the brochure, it sure looks alot like the red one on pg 15, altho this one is a 89. Mine has been repainted, it was originally black, and the grille has been replaced. But it has the BYP code and all the right stuff!

So, lemme get this straight.....

This listing of RPO codes, is it all-inclusive of GM (an assumption) and is it for a specific year or a group of years? At 188 pages, it is at least a lot of data. Pity the poor soul who had the responsibility of creating the document that became that spreadsheet, huh?

As for the comparison between the Sport style and the SS 454.....the wheels are a clue. The Sport style had chrome center caps, while the SS 454 had black center caps. Seems a bit odd, in retrospect, but I remember that difference when they were new to the marketplace.

It covers more than one year. At the top of the first page there is a column headed "effective date" or something, that will give an idea of when the code was first used, many of them were used for many years, ecpecially stuff like window tint, air cond, axle ratio, etc. There are several RPO decoders and lists for specific vehicles out there, I just did a google to find that one. Here's another I'll add for everyone's reference:

http://www.thirdgen.org/rpodecoder

It's on a Camaro site, but it seems to cover many vehicles.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Yes there is a sport that is not a 454. It matches the 454 identically except the decals on the bed. It's a bowtie and says sport. Tailgate decals are the same as well as grille and bumpers. The only ones i know of are 350 5speeds.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Well, I guess I have something of interest to this thread. kevinr1970 pointed me here when he saw pictures of my new daily driver. It is a 1990 GMC Sierra ST. (Sport Truck - I think?). It has a 350/700R combo. Someone mentioned the engine in a similar truck as being responsive, I can confirm that. It has real good power... Lots of get up and go. It is optioned with bucket seats, AC, power windows and locks but no tilt column??? It also has the painted bumpers but is trimmed on the lower part of the truck with gray and a red stripe. Here are some pictures of it.

That is strange it has all those options but no tilt?
I also noticed it has the standard mirrors and not the "sport" mirrors. Maybe that was a GMC vs. Chevy difference?

In the other thread you mentioned maybe doing some paint work. I am certainly not telling you what to do with your truck. Just my opinion but I personally would be inclined to keep the factory scheme. You don't see many and it is "unique" for whatever thats worth. If the paint needs re-doing then I could see doing something different, But it is YOUR truck so do what YOU want to do.

PS; after you have a chance to burn through a few tanks of gas I would be interested to know you MPG average.

PPS: I used to travel around BC a bit during the summers for Mt. bike races. Seems everything a few years old was rusting out. Yours looks pretty good though. Was it garaged or stored during the wet months?
It might have had to do with traveling to ski resorts/mountain towns so that might have had something to do with it.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

The gray with red stripe is a little much for my liking but the paint is in pretty decent shape so I will definitely be leaving it for now. The painted bumpers are starting to rust a bit so I plan to put some chrome ones on it which will tone it down considerably. I hear what you're saying about the truck being "rare" so I will make sure any changes I make are easily reversible.

I will let you know about the gas mileage as soon as I fill it up a few times.

As far as the rust issue, I live in the Okanagan Valley which is very dry and has mild winters so most of the vehicles around here are in pretty good shape. This truck was originally sold at a dealership in the area so it has spent it's whole life in this climate and is very solid. There is no sign of rust in the usual places (around the wheel openings, etc) so I think I found a pretty decent specimen.

Thanks for the heads-up on the recall. Looks like our car is definitely affected.

I finally put the truck through it's first tank of gas and filled up today. Basically all of my driving has been short trips... to and from work and burning around town... Only been on the highway once for a total of about 25 miles. Mileage on the first tank was 13.9 MPG. I'm quite impressed... With the 3.42 gears, I should be able to get 20 or maybe more on the highway.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Saw this one in town today, and actually had my camera!

Saw a red 4X4 sport on the road, also, but couldn't get a pic.

Re: Chevy Sport Truck questions

Here's a good example of a pre-90 sport, from derek6787 in the post your ride thread. I think it's interesting that you could buy a small block "sport" before you could buy a 454ss.
