Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

I used to call them half car/half trucks. They have an open bed to haul cargo. If GM calls them trucks and DMV calls them trucks well then they are trucks. Period.
I kinda liked those Aussie utes too. Ute for utility vehicle. Truck!

I would imagine if enough camino owners approached Josh about creating a sub forum specific to elcamino and sprint trucks he would consider doing so. Meanwhile you guys can post in year specific truck forums and see where it goes.

Yeah, none of us are going to be hurt by another person joining the site. I am also a member of V8Buick.com, and a guy there did an absolutely beautiful job of converting a '70 (I believe) Skylark GS into an "X-Camino. It looks factory, it's so good. Post #16

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

The OP asked if the El Camino is "covered" by this site. In direct terms, no, there's no El Camino section. But the general discussion and general truck forums would definitely be good resources. Heck, if a Luv can be a truck, I would argue an El Camino sure can.

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

You will find more information relating to an El Camino on a chevelle site. Is it a truck? Yes. Is there information on El Camino's on this site? Well, except for engine info, not so much.

I like Elkies, but if I were looking for info on them, I'd look somewhere other than this site.

Good luck, Rg

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

I still think the answer is "No, but you're welcome anyway". I post general questions about big blocks that might be from my 2+2 or might be from my truck, that sort of thing.

So you are certainly more than welcome to hang out and participate but our knowledge of that particular unit is going to be a little sketchy!

Did you know that in Canada, in 1970, on the Chevelle and Sprint they didn't paint the center bar of the grill body color, but just left it black? Now you do! I've seen a lot of incorrect "Canada" cars (which are desirable due to the ironclad docs) that get painted with the US plant style. And that's about all I know about El Caminos!

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

El Camino is a truck which comes in handy when one only needs small items. I don't like taking my C30 to pick up a handful of bolts and a bag of concrete. Maybe El Camino should have it own section here.

The el camilo rides on a car frame, has a car front and rear suspension, has a car front clip, has a car interior, drives like a car. Yea it's a car not a truck!

As I said before, same as the trucks were are celebrating the 100th anniversary of this year. I also asked, by your criteria, what year would be the 100th anniversary, then?

I'll haul the hay in the El Camino and the family in the Chevelle. You can haul the family in the El Camino and the hay in the Chevelle if that pleases you.

The El Camino is actually built off the station wagon chassis, not the car. A station wagon has evolved from this 1918 1t, which was more truck than the pickup...

The fact is, the El Camino is a pickup truck based on a station wagon chassis. It shares most sheet metal with the Chevelle line, same as GM trucks shared with Suburban..until recently. GM has changed how they do this a lot in 100 years...back and forth. A '72 Coupe De Ville is bigger, heavier, has more power, and can haul as much in it's trunk as a '72 LUV. LUVs are Light Utility Vehicles, same as the El Camino. The LUV isn't a car and neither is the El Camino

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

In support of special k's great post. I don't believe that any early pickup had it's own frame and suspension until sometime in the mid thirtys. Before that your choices were real trucks, 1 tons and bigger or pickups with car running gear and truck bodies fitted to them.
Nice story about a well used Elke. I wonder how it would compare with an new four door Colorado?

You comparing a truck to station wagon frame? The station wagon is a extended car frame.

The suburban is a extended truck frame!

You people are ridiculous trying to go back 100 years.

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

Maybe this would be simpler if we all went with my brother's definition of a truck:
Trucks have duals, anything else is just a pickup.

What's ridiculous is arguing whether an El Camino is a car or a truck. The owner can call it a space ship if he wants. But just to be clear, General Motors, the US D.O.T, NHTSA, and state DMVs all classify the El Camino as a light truck.

But, hey, they could all be wrong.

Dad had an el camino when I was little. Ran over my favorite toy with it, felt bad, got me a better toy. Been a fan ever since.

You all can keep making special-k mad, though. I'm enjoying the pics!

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

So it was NOT my intention to start a battle between anyone with my question. I was just curious. I am already a member at Chevelle's.com and have had the long enough that I know it well. It does share truck attributes, like a factory 12 bolt posi, big block with much better heads, and the chassis is fully boxed unlike a Chevelle or pickup of the same year.
In my mind it's more of a muscle car than a truck. Factory 375hp 396, 4 spd.
It was just a curiosity. I don't honestly care one way or the other. I love the thing and have had it since 97. I'm the 2nd owner and it's currently a she'll going through a major restomod update. It will forever be kept to street duty and longer endure regular beatings at the track.
I respect both sides of the argument and have had that debate many times with local folks.
Thanks to everyone for joining the conversation but it's not a big enough deal to be at odds about.

Dan

Re: Is this vehicle covered by the site???

It is amusing to see where the thread went after you asked and I answered with a simple yes. The lines are drawn in the sand but the wind keeps blowing....
If you post about the stuff you are doing with your El Camino or to ask questions about stuff like engines, brakes, body work, etc. I feel it will be welcome. It's a good hearted bunch around here. Most of the work on these cars, trucks, tractors, aircraft, bicycles, or whatever involve methods, skills, ideas, that we can all learn from or contribute to. Now if you go and trade that thing for a Ranchero or Brat and start posting about that, folks might get just a little more vocal...
