Riding the ferry

Nothing too exciting. Had to go to Vashon Island today. Got a decent spot for the ride back. Wanted to see how this pic looks.

Re: Riding the ferry

I like ferrys. We have one to Nantucket and one to Marthas Vineyard. I have to dodge the wakes when I am out rowing and they go by.

Re: Riding the ferry

I like riding the ferrys from Seattle to Bremerton and other places.. also from Anticortus to Lopez where I worked on building a fish tender barge some years ago.

Re: Riding the ferry

I used to ride the ferry's up in the San Juan's a couple times a week for work. Was fun for awhile. But like anything after years of doing it it sort of loses its luster.

Even had a couple of customers up there fly down and pick me up in their private planes at the Arlington airport and fly me back up to their places to work. I even had to ride the mail plane up once in awhile. Sat on a jump seat with my feet splayed out on the mail bags.

Funny thing about living out here in the PNW my entire life. You kind of take the beauty for granted.

Re: Riding the ferry

Yeah, people tend to take their beautiful surroundings for granted when they live in such places. You have to regroup from time to time, take a step back from the daily routine, and put things back in perspective. You want that natural beauty to be part of why you feel so good about living and doing what you do. You could be stuck in the concrete jungle all day where you only see the sun when it's straight up above. When I have to drive to a job down into (just the edge of) the muck sitting in the backed up traffic I feel so happy that I'm not used to that crap. It baffles me to think how most others around me accept that as an everyday thing, what it takes to grab that big paycheck (I would hope!). No thanks by me. I think I'd rather be poor and move freely.

There is a ferry from Lewes, DE across the Delaware Bay to Cape May, NJ I haven't ridden in decades. And in The Outer Banks, NC are the Hatteras-Ocrakoke Is. and Ocrakoke Is.- Cedar Is. ferries. I've ridden those a good bit, but not lately. Actually, there is a ferry across the Potomac River not too far from me I have never ridden. I keep forgetting it's there (taking my historic surroundings for granted?). Seems unusual in the hustle bustle busy busy Washington, DC area.

I have this one picture of the old '71 Custom Camper riding on the Hatteras-Ockracoke Is ferry in the '90s

Re: Riding the ferry

I got to ride one with the 65 somewhere in Louisiana on the Power Tour in 2016. I was able to take the pic before they crammed 20 more cars around me.

I've driven the PCH twice, it's really beautiful up there.

Yeah talk about taking the beauty around you for granted. I don't live too far from PCH and haven't really driven it in years.

Meaning I drive on it when we go to the beach (Kind of hard not to)

But the last time I took it up the coast (To San Francisco) was on my honeymoon with my first wife.

Which is probably the reason I haven't done it since.

I thought it would be a nice romantic drive, which it probably would have been...If I had been with someone else.

Re: Riding the ferry

We rented a brand new mustang drop top in September 2015 and drove the entire route from minutes from the Mexican border, all the way to Seattle. We stayed on 1 and/or 101, whichever followed the coast at the time. It added HOURS to each day, but was totally worth it. We even drove the crazy route that winds north of SF, that took a long time. We spread it out over 9 full days (early morning flight in, redeye out).

So glad we did it because that winter you guys had crazy rains and half the route is closed with landslides and the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge out. We came back this spring and did it in reverse, but mostly to see the redwood forest again, but stayed on 101 most of the time to save hours of driving and "do more relaxing stuff". We stayed in Hunting Beach for 3 days. Love that place. Visited some of the shops (including Fooses). Fires on the beach were pretty awesome too.

We plan on coming back again, but skipping the cities and all the driving, and stay between LA and San Diego for 9 days. Do nothing but car and beach stuff. I even found a place that reasonably rents classic drop tops by the day.

All that said, it's also pretty damn nice up here in the upstate of SC too

Re: Riding the ferry

I loved using the ferry to go between Bremerton and Seattle while I worked for the US Navy. Beautiful scenery. Free ride going to Seattle, something like $8 return. On the weekends when we were not required to work, we would go over to see a baseball game or tour the water front area. I could never live there, but do enjoy visiting.
Riding out to sea on an Aircraft carrier from Bremerton thru the sound was a really cool experience as well.
