Re: Just another old truck.

Hey Kees and Nut Case. Thanks you guys.

Its been awhile since I lasted posted anything on here but that doesn't mean I've not been busy. Been working on a bunch of things, some big and some small.

First thing was my keyless ignition that I made. It turned out to be a prototype. I just over built it. I had to replace the old switch with a new one. Also had to take the switch apart and cut 3 coils off the spring because it was too hard to pull out. Also had to make a few other changes but its back on the dash and working good.

#2 was the parking brake. Made a bunch of little parts and pieces so that all works now.

#3 is the bed and bed steps. I did not have the 3 cross sills so I had to fab them up. Also the bed step supports were missing.

I'm working on more pictures so I will post them later. Just gotta get them together.

Earl

Re: Just another old truck.

Hey joedoh. Thanks a lot. Right now I'm working on a bunch of pictures of the parking/emergency brake system for my truck. Lots of little parts and pieces had to be made.

Re: Just another old truck.

The first thing I had to do was get the drums off so I could install the parking brake levers and cross links and cables.

Just a little story first. Years ago I had the same problem with the rear drum hanging up and not pulling off. All the same things happened. I pounded and pried, and beat the heck out of that drum but no go. I was going to get that drum off no matter what. Anyway, it was a bad time to have a set of torches laying around. I was just mad enough to get them out and so I used the torch to cut the drum off. It came off but now I was standing there with a worthless drum and all the springs and clips inside had to be replaced too. This time I put a little more thought into it.

For now that's it.

Re: Just another old truck.

Well I finally go all my pictures together for the e-brake system. There is some but not much said about e-brakes on this forum so heres my two cents worth.
There was a bunch of stuff not correct or missing on CJ. I had to make or change a lot of the small pieces to make it all work together. All our trucks on this forum have some kind of history about them so heres mine.

Re: Just another old truck.

nice work. very detailed pics.
I am lucky enough to have a parts washer with a pump in it. what I have done in the past to clear the park brake cables of dirt or rust or whatever that builds up inside the sheath is first get them freed up, then put a section of hose over top of one end of the cable sheath and clamp it on with a gear clamp. then hook the other end up to the washer hose so it pumps solvent through the cable sheath. the solvent should start squirting out the other end of the cable soon enough, depending on how dirty the cable was. you can speed things up some by moving the cable in and out from the solvent exit point where the inner part is accessible. when all done disconnect the hose from the washer and use compressed air to blow the solvent out, then dump some thin oil in the hose where it used to connect to the washer unit and blow the oil through the cable. bicycle shops sell some great synthetic cable lube if you're looking for something that will stick with it. all ready to go another few years.
on a side note, if you find, while flushing the cable, that there are areas where the solvent is coming out the side of the cable sheath then you can mark that area and later, when the cable is allowed to dry-before lubing, you can use electrical shrink tube to seal off the cable in that spot. use the double wall shrink tube because it has glue on the inside that helps the tube stick to the cable sheath. shrink tube is available in long lengths so you could do the entire cable if you wanted to.

Re: Just another old truck.

Hello Jim. Thanks for that. Most of these old trucks on this forum after may years and owners find that many of the old parts are lost or broken and its hard to find replacement pieces. We all like to share ideas back and forth. Maybe it will help someone some day. My short coming is in the electrical department.

Hey Dennis, thank you. I like the idea about the shrink tubing. Its an idea that I will try out in the future.

Hello there Kees. Thank you very much.

Earl

Re: Just another old truck.

This past week I've been working on the passenger rear fender removing the old paint and making one small patch panel over the step. Got all the paint off the outside and one good coat of epoxy primer on. In this rainy weather it starts to flash rust in half a day or less. I'm off to get a new HF welding helmet so I can finish welding this patch panel in.
On a side note fabbing and welding these patch panels up is naturally getting easier and I'm not worried or afraid of doing them anymore. YAHOO.
Still have a bunch more to do on the front clip.

Earl

Re: Just another old truck.

Hey Joedoh, thanks again.

Thanks Jim. I'm looking forward to finishing this fender so I can get paint on it. I want to do the paint like you showed us on your truck. I can only paint one piece at a time. This just seems like a good place to start. I anticipate good results. I've leaned a bunch from my past mistakes. So lets see what happens. Thanks again.

Re: Just another old truck.

Back to post something I did awhile back. I wanted to move the fuel filter out of this spot to a place that would help clean up the top of the motor. This only ate up an hour of my time. Gotta see what else I can change that I thought I was done with. Never ending.
