Same here, I would never use one.
When we started dating my wife's car had a "bra" on it (remember those?) for probably a good 5 years by then. It literally did more harm than good. The biggest issue was the paint had literally faded around it, so I put it back on.

I would imagine since so many of today's new trucks having the 4.5-5 ft beds, the blankie is about the only way you can haul a bicycle in the bed with the tailgate up.

The type of mount I use mounts the bike at the fork with the front tire removed. I used to stuff my bike in the back seat of my '56 bug with the front tire removed. I'd hope one would fit in anything they call a pickup. Any truck with a bed less than 6' better have a hitch mount for a trailer.
Our friend SEE TEN is into bikes and rides a lot. I see he uses a hitch mount.
