Re: Let's See Your Christmas Decorations

Pardon my ignorance, but what does that sign mean? Never saw one like that before. No framing squares?

That is a good guess. Haven’t had that one yet. The “framing square” is actually the letter “L”. Try saying it out loud “no L”.

Merry Christmas,

Re: Let's See Your Christmas Decorations

DOH! Ok, I get it. Did you make that sign? If it looked like you made it I might have gotten it, but it looks official so I was focused on what it stood for. These 'symbol' signs are supposed to be internationally understood and I have no clue... if it is an actual road sign

Re: Let's See Your Christmas Decorations

No lights for me, my roofer just finished my new roof and gutters yesterday. Plus I'm getting lazier in my old age!! My wife had two co-workers that lived next to each other, one would add 10,000 lights every year. He was way over 100,000 lights the other would put up one light.

Re: Let's See Your Christmas Decorations

I was talking to someone yesterday who feels it is ridiculous to 'murder' a tree to put in your house for ten days. He's ok with live trees and feels there should be some public program to provide a location to plant them. I say pick something else to worry about. Many do buy live trees and plant, and his idea is actually a good one. But it is not even close to murdering a tree when I go to a farm where someone has chosen to use their land to plant trees for people to come "harvest" every 7-10 years. In those years the trees do what others do, absorb carbon monoxide and expel oxygen. If the trees weren't cut for Christmas they'd likely mature into trees logged for lumber, like that used to build this guy's house and his children's houses. The joyous spirit that celebrating Christmas brings far outweighs any possible negative. Even though the origins are Christian, it is a happy time for all and a time to focus on a more positive human element no matter who you are or what you believe.
The closest place I cut is a neighbor I am helping with my purchase. Their farm got dissected by the state road leaving a depressed field on the opposite side no good for growing anything else. The other place, not far from here, is a big tree farm that has been doing this for over 50 years and I am helping the elder owner make some income. His land would likely have been consumed by Lehigh for quarrying limestone by now if not used for a Christmas tree farm. On the 'green' side, that's 50 years of no till, no fertilizer, no stream erosion from cattle, no altering run-off, habitat for birds & game, soil stabilization, and no housing development like the one he probably lives in.

I probably should have left all that out. Don't let it be a kill joy. I was coming home last night from a visit with a friend up on the mountain in PA. I got to see all the Christmas lights I don't normally see strewn across the countryside between, about 40 miles. One little don't blink town not far from here has a second little street that shoots off at an angle from the crossroad. There are three little old 2-story frame houses along there pretty well spaced and evenly. Turns out all three do up the lights, house trees, fence, etc. It's clear field between the main rd I was on and this one. Fence runs along all three places so the lights you see run for about 1/4 mile end to end. Really neat out in the country. You always see stars on silos and sometimes barns all lit up.

Down in Baltimore there is an infamous block of rowhouses that do it up to the extreme and it is an attraction

Re: Let's See Your Christmas Decorations

If I marry the Asian Persuasion I'm going to have to go "all out" every Christmas as they don't do that sort of thing on her island and she's addicted to Hallmark movies.

In fact we'll have to go all out on every American holiday as she's never gotten to do any of these things and is fascinated by them. *She's never even seen snow.
