Sealant around vin tag

Just bought this Blazer and found the sealant behind vin tag to be a bit strange. I believe the rivets and paint are original. Was this a Blazer thing, or are there any guesses why they used sealant in the corners on this one?

Re: Sealant around vin tag

Don't recall seeing this on my 72 Blazer and the VIN tag was removed at the DMV when I had the frame replaced and a new VIN done by the state. I would say that it was done on purpose. Hope I am wrong on that assumption. Did you check the frame to see if it matches?

My Flint assembled K20 had similar findings - looked like extruded tooth paste. That's OEM. Let's see more pictures of the new Blazer please.

Re: Sealant around vin tag

Cool beans. Forgot to add, I'm not sure what that material is but it's akin to whatever was used on the seat belt to floor bolts. Maybe a bedding compound like what was used for windshields?

Re: Sealant around vin tag

Are the rivets pulled tight to the vin plate?

Re: Sealant around vin tag

Here's mine, original paint 1970.

Since we are on the topic of VIN plates, has anyone ever noticed that the GVW for 69-70 is only 5000 lbs, yet 71-72 is 5850 lbs?
Where did they pull the other 850lbs?
This might not seem like a big deal, but it is. My truck empty weighs around 4800lbs, and I'm 220lbs. You do the math on this.
How were these trucks even legal?
GVW (gross vehicle weight) is the maximum the truck can weigh including fuel, load and passengers.
