new rear end for a 1962

I was thinking about putting a new rear end in my 62 c10 step side so that I can get a better gear ratio and maybe rear disk brakes. What is my best option. I am not racing. I just got a 700r4 installed and I have a small block 350.

The 3.90 ( probably) would do well with the 4speed OD. Have you driven?

There isn't a bunch of options for that rear end. Best for a 71-78 12 bolt, cut the mounts off and weld in some for your coil rear, get the mounts from Capt Fab here on the forum.

Good luck!

No I have not driven it yet. It did fairly well whit the th350 I had in there before. It ran around 3000 rps at about 65-70 mph. I was just trying to figure out if I could get better speed and drive ability out of the my engine.

I wonder if you have the other higher gear option? I believe it's around 3.38 or something. I have a th350 with a Gear Vendor overdrive behind it, 3.73's. I run about the same as you were. 70 mph at around 3K. Maybe give the original a chance with the 700r4.

If you want to stay with 6 lug wheel stud pattern I would suggest a '64-'70 truck 12 bolt. If you want to change to the 5 x 5 wheel stud pattern, a '71-'82 12 bolt would be the choice. With either one, the trailing arm mounts will have to either be moved or added. The parts availability for the truck 12 bolt is much better than for the Eaton HO32/33.
