How To I Go About Making Sure Everything Is Square?

Do I Drill All The Holes Out On The Bed Side Flanges?

Is There a Certain Measurement For The Tail Gate Opening

Also I Enclosed a Picture Of The Bedside Way Out. Drivers Side Is Fine. The Sills Are Centered To The Frame..
Looks About 1.5 inches Out

How Do i Fix This?

Any Tips Would Help Greatly

I Will Post Some More Tonight. Its Where The Front Of The Bed Meets The Cab. The Bottom Passenger Side Is Flared Out About 1.5 Inches Than The Cab.

Oh, I see it now. That is a bit odd. You will need to check your measurements between the hold down strips on the bed sides. I copied the below from another post about bed dimensions:

Inside height of bed (to top of bed) = 19 1/2 inches; Inside length = 78 1/4 (SWB) and 98 inches (LWB); Width of bed = 66 inches; width between wheel houses = 50 inches. From the diagram, it seems that the distance between uprights, when the tailgate is open, is the 66-inch measurement.

Also, I made sure my bed was square by measuring diagonally about a dozen times and adjusting until I was less than 1/16" difference. Then I laid out all my wood with the hold down strips. Adjusted them side to side and front to back until I was happy with all my gaps. Marked the side pieces for holes by scribing through the hold down strips on the bed sides. Numbered the bed strips from left to right so I'd put them back in the exact locations. The ones with the actual bed to frame mount bolts were an issue but the middle pieces I wanted to make sure they went back where I laid them out.

Now, as to how to fix the bow in the bed side, I will leave that to a much better body person that I am.

Fleetside bed? I just did my longbed step side. I placed outer two skinny pieces in first as they sit flush with the edge of the bed. I then worked my way in and once everything appeared to line up I began to tighten everything up. Last thing I did was drill the holes into the skinny wood pieces on the outside after I knew everything else was in the right place.

Again, this is step side but gives you an idea. Photos of my process. My wife asked me how many times I was going to take it apart and put it back together and I told her, "As many times as it takes."

I just finished my 71 long bed wood. GMC Pauls website has all the wood dimensions.
I measured for the hold down bolt holes from each side inward.Measure the holes in the from rails and just cut the number is half to find center line. If that makes sense.

Thank You Guys For The Replys. I Loosened All The Box Up And Pushed Here and Pulled There And Seem To Got It Pretty Close. Other Than Ruining The Paint On The Bolt Heads It Worked Out.

The One Thing Im Not Sure Of If How The Smaller Two Bed Sills Mount To The Frame From The Wheel Wells.. or Do They Bolt To The Frane. Theres One Long One And One Short One.

The two narrow sill plates that are visible through the wheel well do not bolt to the frame.

As far as the width at the tailgate goes. One truck could be slightly different from the next and you should determine that by preassembling the tailgate to the bed to find out what you bed wants. I'd hate to measure mine to find out yours wants an 1/8" more or less...you would not be happy.

I converted my steel bed to wood from scratch, no kits as I was on a budget that allowed more time and less money. I squared the bed up without installing the wood and by having the tail gate installed. To do this, I took careful measurements from the front left corner to the back right corner and compared that to the opposite measurement (front right to back left). When those two measurements are the same, the bed is squared up in itself. Then you want to check the widths about every foot or so from front to back to make sure your side panels are straight. The width at the front end of the bed should be very close to the width at the tailgate. Some slop is available at the front panel to finesse the width, but not much (maybe a total of an 1/8" when both sides are adjusted all-in or all-out...a 1/16th per side).

From there you need to align the bed to the cab or vise versa, which ever needs shifted, or both. I would max out the slop, in your case, so that the front of the bed is as wide as you can get it, then center the bed with the cab, then inspect to see if your bed to frame mounting holes line up well enough to get it bolted up. If not, look at moving the cab and front clip...or inspect for a bent frame.

Nothing is attached to the frame other than the drop down bolts in the 2 boards. The 2 bolts at the rear drop through an eyelet attached to the rear bed cross member.. everything thing else is just bolted to the bed sheet metal
