No instructions? If you can figure out if the latch is normally open or closed circuit then you can check the relay with a multimeter to see which direction opens the circuit. Match it to the latch and you are ready to go. Most relays operate as open until the signal wire energizes the solenoid which closes the internal contacts between the power wire and wire to what ever is being operated.

Re: door relay - which side is which?

Found this looking for the same info - my door relays (the splined mechanism the door handle on the inside goes on that open s the doors) on my truck were off when I got it. I've scoured catalogs and done searches but have not found the answer yet - how do you tell right from left?

Also - rumor has it you can buy a rebuild kit with a new splined shaft - anyone know who sells these?

Thanks!

its been a while since I had mine apart, but if the foggy old brain is correct, seems like there's only one way they mount. seems like mine had 3 screws in a triangle shape with the long link arm pointing back. if you need more info I could pull the interior panel & look.

This link to old car manual project shows one installed. They go in different from what you would think. They should pull back to open and push forward to lock.

They can be mounted either side, however one way will result in push-to-open, the other way pull-to-open. What's your preference?
BTW, the inner door mechanism going FORWARD opens the door, pulling the strap back to the rear locks it.

Here are some mid-'60's relays I modified for my '50 because I wanted horizontal connecting bars, which were not available in reproduction.
At $29 each, they also were curiously less expensive than reproduction AD relays.

Thanks guys - I appreciate the responses. I am working on the steering at the moment but will get back to this shortly. I may just order new parts and start fresh as suggested.
