Dismantling A Suburban

So I have this one-owner 67k20 body that I need to dismantle(chassis is in the garage rebuilt). I found an almost rust-free body that I will put on the chassis. My question: where should I make my cuts for the pieces that I want to keep? The roof is dented,right-rear quarter panel is junk, windshield frame, etc. I have room to store the sheet metal for another project.

Maybe someone could draw a picture for me and map it out?

I would cut the panels as big as I could just to make sure I had all the useable stuff. Not sure how bad the top is or where it is bent but some of the crew cab guys could probably use the good parts.

I use a sawzall for most of my panel salvage but a cutoff tool works good in some places too. Just be sure and get a full face shield before you start.

Red face Re: Dismantling A Suburban

What I have done in the past is to cut the good panel pieces oversize as much as possible to make it easier for the body shop. To make quick work of this task rent a gas powered chop saw for the big straight cuts and the sawsall for the small and curved cuts. The sawsall blades you save should offset the rental cost substantially. Just a word of caution its best not to do this on Sunday morning at 7:00 if you like your neighbors.

I am going to start cutting tomorrow! I want to keep the firewall and floor pans. Where should I make those cuts properly?

Re: Dismantling A Suburban

Looks like you had a productive day. Now the big dilemma. To save the center floor as one piece or to separate into two pieces, the floor and the third door sill.? Most likely someone needing the flloor will also need the sill. But the sill alone will sell faster. Oh what to do????

Re: Dismantling A Suburban

I am going to save all of it for now, because my 71k20 suburban needs rust repair!
Next, I need to take the side windows out. I am sure that someone has done this. What's the easiest way? Would like to save the gaskets if I can.

Re: Dismantling A Suburban

I was unable to save mine due to the rear corners were too hard and ended up cracking. Maybe if I had tried from the inside instead on the outside I may of had better results. I recommend wetting them down for a couple of days with soapy water and/or WD-40 to help soften the rubber. I soaked my fixed 1/4 window seals for a week prior to reinstallation and it made a real difference. I have heard since that WD-40 will help too. It's definitely not a one person job. And if things go horribly awry there is a set of windows on C/L locally at present.
Good luck.

Re: Dismantling A Suburban

Finished tearing her down today. I get my "new" rust-free body next weekend, so I had to make room! I will start a build thread soon.
