What is this loose cable inside the engine bay?
I just noticed this loose cable next the the carb, under the air filter.
Any idea what it is? Looks like a bicycle brake cable.

It's a cable to the valve body in your transmission. It's fairly important in a TH350, and VERY important in a 700R4. It pins onto the throttle at the bottom. See that slot? It is adjusted such that it is usually pulled fully at wide open throttle (it will not move at all for the first half of your throttle as there will be no contact yet).

I think it's called the kick down cable. Makes it downshift when you put the hammer down.

I have a th350, so it looks like it is not mandatory to have this cable hookedup eh?

Only if you want your trans to work correctly. It's the kick down cable.

I read on jalopyjournal that if you don't drive WOT, then the cable never activates anything. Since I don't drive WOT with this truck, I guess I am ok leaving it unhooked.

Your logic makes ZERO sense. No WOT ever? We're not talking about drag racing or going to Bonneville. Think about passing someone. Think about accelerating at full throttle for safety reasons, like getting out of someone's way. Fix your truck.

I'd hook it up. You can always disconnect it.
Use a nylon lock nut if you do. It wont bind and won't vibrate off again. Looks like the screw and washers are still there. |
