Trans Cooler for TH400 w/2800 Stall
In the middle of installing a 385 cu in Gen 1 Small Block. I have a TCI TH400 with a new FTI 2800 stall converter ready to go with it. I already installed a deep pan but I also want to run a cooler. A friend gave me a new Derale 21" Frame-rail/Heat-sink type cooler. I like the idea because it won't block as much of the radiator as a plate cooler. I already have a Vintage Air condenser on there.
Question is... Can I get away with putting the cooler under the radiator (behind the Bumper) or should I put it in front of the radiator. I was thinking installing it up and down if I do it in front of radiator. I never tow anything but I do go from Sacramento to Tahoe/Reno, which is a good 90 minute climb. |

Regardless of towing or not, I would put it where it can get as much air flow as possible. 2800 stall is going to throw some heat

By itself, that is not enough cooler for your application. Do you plan to run it in series with your radiator cooler?

Re: Trans Cooler for TH400 w/2800 Stall
After looking into this more I realized the "free" heat sink was not what I need. I gave it back...
I ordered this: DER-13614 Fluid Cooler, Plate-Fin Type, Aluminum, 10.125 in. x 11.875 in. x 1.25 in. Does this seem to be enough? I'm swinging in the dark as I have no experience with high stall converters. Thanks for any advice. |

This is a good read on the subject. Discusses various types of coolers, the reasons for using them and brings up some good points about flow restrictions within the fittings you choose.

Re: Trans Cooler for TH400 w/2800 Stall
Thanks... this is good info. Especially how engine temp is affected as well. The cooler I ordered runs -6 fittings, but then the fittings into the trans are no larger anyway, so I think I am doing the right thing.
Looks like my next purchase is a good trans temp gauge... |
