65 C10 Stepside Frame What happened?

First time caller, long time listener, y'all have helped me answer many a question by going through others problems. BUT now I have a question.

I finally started digging into tearing her apart after 11 years of ownership. And well.... I found she had the wrong passenger side frame to engine mount (fixed now), tie rod welded, and the rear cross member is JACKED. I have scoured the internet looking for the right placement of the shocks and have not really found an answer, so here I am. Currently I am gonna have a buddy clean up the trashy welds and see where it goes. My question is anyone else have this problem? What are some of the "farmer fixes" you have encountered?

Oh little background on the truck, I believe it was a prior county rig and than it spent a while on a farm.

I would just go ahead and pull that crossmember and maybe search a wrecking yard for a replacement. You could also do a shock mount relocator from an aftermarket supplier.

I agree with Clyde65. While you have it this far apart I would just replace the entire crossmember. It will be a bit of work, but at least it will be repaired correctly. I will have to look and see if I happen to have one of those crossmembers. You might check the '60-'66 classifieds here on the forum for someone parting out a truck..

You can also check with the guy in Woodburn for that cross member, he's got a substantial stock in these trucks.

I didn't see his ad up on Criagslist this morning, looks like he reposts it weekly or so, but his number is 503-710-0423.

I haven't made it out there yet but a buddy bought some parts from him last year and said he's got container after container full of these pickups.

You can remove the rivets. Get a used part then bolt it back in.

Going to sound a little stupid.... I had not thought about that. haha.

And I know about the guy in Woodburn area. I tried to get parts from him but getting in contact with him is like pulling teeth.

I have stumbled upon Classic Automotive in Vancouver. Anyone have luck with them?

I appreciate it all!

I probably should have put in, Washington. Vancouver, Washington. I mean I am sure there will be a difference what with sales taxes and all.

Are you talking about All American Classics, the wrecking yard?

A buddy recommended them to me and I stopped by one afternoon when I was in the area a year and a half ago or so. They had a pretty good selection of the old pickups but I haven't purchased anything from them as my schedule doesn't work with theirs as they aren't open on the weekends. They aren't a u-pull-it type place but if you call ahead, they can usually have the part ready by the time you get there from what I was told. They are a little more proud of their stuff than most but seem to be great guys.

Another place to go that has some old iron is Dick's U-Pull-It up in Spanaway. It's a bit of a drive but they have at least 3 pickups there right now, 2 C10s and what looked like a C60 maybe, it had a small back window so I didn't look too hard at it. Both the C10s have the beds on them still and they are packed of stuff so it'd be some work to get the rear crossmember off of one of them but they have some pretty reasonable prices.

Re: 65 C10 Stepside Frame What happened?

Glad you knew who I was talking about. Their website has a different title than the company. Thanks for the info, I was trying to see if they were a u-pull-it but had no such luck in finding on the website. I'll give them a call tomorrow to see what I can get. Oh and just found out my driver side lower control arm is bent. Ha.... lucky me..
