Question on 56 GMC
Can you help me with my serial number?
I have an old GMC pick up serial number 102CY3991.  I think I have this almost figured out. 10= ½ ton 2= long bed C=Oakland California Y= Later part of 1955 3991 = production number Does the Y mean 1955? The title says 1956. Is this truck a 1955? There is a comment section on the title that says 3625 56 I was wondering if the title may be wrong. Do you know how many trucks of this model were produced that time frame? I haven’t seen too many GMC long beds with the custom cabs out there and was wondering if I got I rare one. |

Your VIN # 102CY3991, as you figured out is as follows:
102 = 1/2 ton longbed C = California, Oakland Y = 1956 3991 = production # Z = 1955 I believe if your truck was a V-8 truck the VIN would read 1028CY3991. The website listed in the above post is for 1960-1966 GMC trucks. The website applicable to the 1955-1959 GMC trucks is http//1955GMC.com |

You have been very helpful. My son and I are restoring a 56 GMC longbed and we are very excited. I bought it 25 years ago and never had the time to restore it. My son is restoring it for his senior project.  We will post a picture of it when we get done.

found a web sight on serial numbers
Came across a web sight oldGMCtrucks.com. The Y in my serial number is the 1955 production per the GMC record books. The truck was amoung the last trucks off the line in 1955 (Y series production) That would put my truck in the last quater of the year and very near the end. Because it was at the end of the production run, It probably was sold in 1956. You might find this web sight helpful.
Are the 1955 Y series production models harder to find and are they more valuable? Was just courious.

The Y meaning last quarter of the year for 55, is mostly because the first half of 55 was the 54 body style GMC. If I am wrong, somebody set me straight.

Sorry guys, I made a mistake. I even misread the very website
(http://www.1955gmc.com) that I refered to. You are correct: Y=1955 X=1956 T=1957 S=58-59 Thanks for not letting me give out incorrect info! |

What 56gmc finally found out is correct. They just sold the left over "y" as 56. It is not worth more or less.
