dana 60 questions

i am installing a 4 inch skyjacker lift on my 1988 ccsb . my question is on the passengerside of the dana 60, there are two bolts that go into the housing instead of u bolts . should i use studs instead of bolts to secure the thicker leaf springs ?

Re: dana 60 questions

I kept the bolts and beat the crap out of my front end by ramping it and slamming it down but that's just my experience, i have seen people convert them to studs because they either had them break or think its going to break

Re: dana 60 questions

Studs.
If the bolt is a little too long, and tightens up in the hole before the spring top plate, then the springs can move around.

If the bolt is a little too short, then it could strip out the threads in the housing when you torque it down.

For maximum thread engagement and strength, use studs.

Re: dana 60 questions

Ok. So I was in an accident and the studs broke. I cannot find any new ones without buying the whole bolt kit. Any one got any or a source for some good ones. I have bolts in now but have not driven it yet. Sorry to hijack crewcabshorty but this info will help you too.

Re: dana 60 questions

Try an industrial supply house. Measure the leanth of the new bolt required an see if you can get grade 8 shoulder bolts. They will be stronger than most studs, and remember if you use a stud type fastener the nut must be of equal strength.

Re: dana 60 questions

McMaster Carr has 5/8-11 grade 8 threaded rod 3' long for $13.43. I didn't see the tall gr 8 nuts though. And I didn't look for the washers.
But by the time you order all that and shipping, you my as well order the u bolt and stud kit for a D60.

Re: dana 60 questions

Any suspension place should have or either make the u-bolt, and I went to hardware store and got the threaded rod. Cleaned the threads in the axle, threaded the rod all the way, tightened it then cut off where I has some extra thread. Never had an issue.

He just needs the studs, not the u bolts.
Most hardware stores don't carry grade 8 threaded rod that big.
