Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

Nothing that im aware of. You really cant just add an overdrive to a transmisson that wasnt designed to have it. Not having your 1-1 gear and replacing it with overdrive would hurt a lot in most driving. The switch from 2nd to overdrive would lug the engine a ton and render the gear almost useless. the transmission now has Granny then 1st 2nd and 3rd 3rd being 1-1 You cant just get rid of the 1-1 gear and replace it with overdrive.

Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

thats not what i was wanting to do i know that. I wanted a 1st through 4th change in gear sets. by that i mean changing the first gear so it isnt a granny and changing the rest accordingly where as my actual 3rd gear would become 1:1 and 4th would become something beyond that.

Ahh gotcha... Your best bet is to just swap to a different transmission.

To get an overdrive your going to likely end up with a 5 speed. Unless you go to an auto.

There is the New Process A-833 3 speed with overdrive transmission. Some mid 80s chevy trucks had them. Its a old Chrysler design & a good transmission.

Yup, I'm currently looking for one of those as well. NP440, GM code MY6.

It has a total of 4 forward gears with 4th being a slight overdrive.

This transmission was also offered in Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volare vehicles from the mid to late 70's as well.

I would assume that the input shaft splines are different but I can't see there being something preventing it from being used on a GM.

Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

In the late 60's/early 70's GM offered the full synchro Saginaw 3 speed with OD and the OD unit can be adapted to the Saginaw 4 speeds "relatively" easily. Problem is that they are getting pretty rare these days.

Most often, they came in A-body Mopars. Dart, Duster, Volare, Aspen, etc.

Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

>>the OD unit can be adapted to the Saginaw 4 speeds<< CAR Saginaw.

Are you not talking about a 4X4 with the SM465 truck trans? You'd play hell getting the T-85 3-sp OD on the back of the SM465 and then you would probably have to use a divorced transfer case.

The A-833 is the Chrysler car 4-spd used in their cars in the '60s and '70s. The A-833 OD is still a car 4-spd, but was also used in Chevy and Dodge trucks.
4th gear is still 1:1 , but is called 3rd. 3rd is regeared and called 4th as the OD.
You end up with what Cableguy was explaining. With your SM465 you drive 90% of the time using 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Pretend you have an OD that is above 4th. Drive around using only 2nd, 4th and OD.
The A-833 with OD has a pretty good step, but not as big and it does have a usable 1st gear. The A-833 OD probably works good in a light car, but I don't think it makes a good truck trans. The regular A-833 is unbreakable as a car trans and has good gear spacing for that.
There are several on the Stovebolt forum that use the A-833 OD and claim they love it, but there are some that quietly replaced it with a 5spd.
Again, you would be looking at a divorced Transfer case.

Wouldn't an NV4500 4x4 5spd be a mostly bolt up conversion?

Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

im not sure what 5 speeds would bolt in. I am trying to find out all the info i can get about getting an overdrive. I really would like a bolt in application lol. I am currently getting 7 1/2 miles to the gallon doing 75 with 33"tires. Thats roughly 75 the tires throw off the spedo. any info on different transmissions that would bolt in is appreciated.

Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

Your just flat out not going to get good mileage in a 4wd with 33 inch tires. Modern trucks with fuel injection and overdrive barely get 10-12mpg with big tires. Unsprung weight has a huge impact on the amount of power it takes to move a vehicle.

Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

well on the highway doing 75 i am doing about 3,000 rpms or a little more usually more. I think and overdrive would bring that down a little bit which would increase fuel mileage a little bit. I used to have a 72 2 wheel drive with a 350 and a 4 barrel quadrajet and i got 13 mpg

You cannot compare 2wd and 4wd. Its not apples to apples. Slow down to 65mph and see if your mileage improves any. It probably will a little bit but I wouldnt expect a huge improvement.

Re: does anyone offer an overdrive gear set for saginaw 4 speed with granny gear

you could put a nv4500 5 speed has granny low and overdrive they came in Chevy trucks from 93-98 it is about the same size as the sm465 the shifter is set a little further back and Advance Adapters makes a adapter kit so you can use your transfer case or you can get a np205 off of a th400 and it will bolt up.

Adapter Kit

Dirty Larry and a few others in the 4x4 section have done this swap here is Larry's there is a lot of good info in here
