my dad had a 72 Cheyenne back in about 93, and lately he's been talking alot about wishing he had never sold it.. i miss the truck too, so i would like to find it if there is any way too... im almost positive i can find an old insurance card or something with the vin number on it.... can i go to the dmv or courthouse with the vin and trace the truck?

I know here,a s long as you have the serial number, you can go to your local DMV and get the current name and address of the owner. You can even check the vehicle history to check for any insurance claims.

Most...if not all, states have made it to where you can NOT trace a vehicle.
It used to be the same as Dubie stated, but too many vehicles being stollen, and it was too easy to get too much personle info from just getting there VIN and doing other searches.
chances are you won't be able to do it.

If you have the vin you can find it for a fee throught carfax.com but if you need help let me know i do p.i. work i have a lot of resources to look it up by.

Here in NEVADA, you can go to the DMV and sign a Intent card And pay a small fee, They then will give you the current R.O and Legal owner. Then with your I.D. on file if something happens to the vehicle, They do a search and you come up. Unless it has changed Washington State used to be the same way.
Another way you can go about it is if you have a friend that is in Law enforcemant.

The only way to find out for sure is to ask the DMV of your state. Every state is different on this. Here in Pa, you can do a search going back only 10 years and you pay $5.00 for each owner.

most of the time you can do it through the state motor vehicles they can provide the last known registrant or the person who had a title for it last. You can try under the freedon of information act to get this but in some states (PA for example) they wont let ya get this info until they notify and get approval fromt he person who currently owns the vehicle
There are also sites to trace motor vehicle records but be careful using them some if not most are scams

Carfax.com only works for vehicles with longer VIN numbers (17 digits?) which I believe only goes back to the late 70's or early 80's. Even then, if I remember correctly, they tell you the city where it is/was registered but not the current owners name or address.
