daily driver troube

Hey all,
My daily driver is a 1999 suburban 1/2 ton 4x4. 5.7 Vortec... I've got an internal coolant leak turning my oil to brown sludge. I'm guessing either a bad head gasket or bad intake gasket. What's the best diagnosis method? Compression test? Or should I assume the head gasket is the problem and replace that and the intake at the same time?
Thanks
