Re: nv 4500 swap

Search for DirtyLarry's nv4500 swap thread. There is a wealth of info in it.

Re: nv 4500 swap

the transfer case that came stock from gm in 88 is the round pattern np205. this does match the new venture gear 6 bolt round mounting pattern on the nv4500 tcase adapter.

however, your input gear on the 205 is the long input gear. this means it will bottom out on the nv4500 output shaft. a spacer is available through advance adapters. OR you can swap out your 205 input gear for a short input gear from a 32 spline np205 prior to 1985. this uses the same bearing size but the tcase will bolt up to the 4500 without the spacer now.

then comes into shifting. without the spacer you have to clearance the nv4500 adapter for the shift rails on the 205. with the spacer there is room courtesy of advance adapters.

this is all good. the clearance on the Nv4500 tailhousing isn't that difficult to do but i recommend using the spacer for one to avoid having to spend $125 for an input(aa spacer is less than $100) and cracking open the tcase, and two it helps marginally with the front drive line angle.

you will also loose the factory form of shifter mounting. i think AA has a bracket for that. i fabbed all of mine for my jeep that uses a round pattern 205 and AA spacer. i am sure that making a bracket wouldn't be hard to facilitate all of the GM stuff.

your bell housing will not work. the bearing cover hole is a different diameter and the bolt pattern is different from the 465 to the two versions of the nv4500 that are also different from one another. AA bell housings are great and solve all of the issues. they also sell a 25$ part to locate the hydraulic T/O slave on the BH. that way you dont need to do anthing but attach your stock slave cylinder and away you go.

Re: nv 4500 swap

I have been working on this swap for 6 months. Finding the parts locally is nearly impossable. If/when I do find them they are over priced compared to others locations on this site.

I am more convinced with every passing day that the COMPLETE NV4500 kit from: http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...ear/nv4500.htm
is the way to go for me. At 3 grand its not cheap until you consider your getting everything you need, brand new with a warranty. No rebuilding a used trans, swapping gears/inputs, blah, blah blah.

Stick it in and be done with it for another 40 years.

Re: nv 4500 swap

when i did the swap in my red/orange K2500 in my avatar i bought a bolt in, or as bolt in as these things go, set up from a member. he assembled it from AA who offered transmissions at the time and i think boought a rebuilt 205. it was definately worht the 3k i spent to have all of the parts. all i did was bolt it in and modify the mounting. there is a write up in FAQs from when i did it way back in 2004-5.

for my jeep i bought a used tranny with 100k on it that had synchromesh in it so it was still in great internal shape. i did pull the cover to check though. i also got a t case for it and re-sealed it myself. after the BH and adapter ring i was into it for 1200 bucks. ive never had issue with either JY part so it was a good deal

Re: nv 4500 swap

I'm doing a 6.0 Nv4500 Np205 swap now. I'm using a AA belhousing spacer for the np205. I had to gring on the trans tail housing so the shifter rails will clear. (It's not hard I used an end grinder from harbor freight) For the shifter I contacked ORD and they made me up a twin stick to work. It wont ingauge just the front tires because i didnt have the shifter rails modified but I liked the shifter mounting a lot better than the AA kit. It was cheesy. Being here In Pueblo I have DirtyLerry as a good friend and a great help. He did the swap a while a go and has a welth of knowledge. I did have issues with the external slave cyclinder and exhause that i'm inthe process of figuring out.

That is an odd year NV4500, it is going to have the 5.35:1 1st gear ratio, but it still has the smaller bearing design. The bell housing on it is different than the 92-94 and the 96-2003.

Advance Adapters makes a bell housing that will mate that transmission to your engine with no issue what so ever, I have used it several times, twice with that model year transmission.

Use Advance Adapters hydraulic slave cylinder kit, it works well. it will hook to your stock MC with the right fittings. They have everything you need.

When looking at the transmission, don't mess around, take it to a reputable shop, have it rebuilt with quality parts, get a warranty on it, stick it in the truck. A bench built transmission like that should run around 1500 bucks.

The weak link in these transmissions is the carbon syncros, they need a special gear oil with a GL5 rating, there is a Castrol Syntorq supplied by the dealer you are supposed to use. Regular gear oil will eat those syncros and then you will be stuck rebuilding the trans. Many NV4500's you will find for sale have suffered this fate.
