Re: New project

Had a good time in Ennis , Texas for the bracket finals . Got there thursday and dropped the trailer . Checked into the hotel around 3:00ppm had everything unloaded and ready to test and tune by 6 pm . First pass i got a bit over zelous and wrung it out in the burnout box filling the top of the motor with oil . Oil light flickered at me after the burnout and sure enough , valve cover leak . Tightened the cover and made 2 good hits Was 6 numbers apart from 7 to 10pm . Truck was running good . Locked camp down and headed out .

First thing friday morning , oil down passenger side of motor . sent wife into town for parts and got it fixed . 1 tt and then gamblers race . truck was still good . driver , not so good . Numbers still in line but i went red first pass right lane . I just flat out left on the second amber . Cold front came through about 10 pm . Temp dropped like 40 degrees in an hour .

Saturday was sceduled to be 1 time trial and then first round of elems . 54 degree track . Time trial was a wild ride .015 in the right lane as it rotated right in the wheelie . I pulled 2nd and brought it down and drug it back leeft into the groove missing the wall by a foot or less . it spun til i made 2/3 shift and left rubber til 120' . fastest pass of the weekend @6.971 . Went red by a touch right lane again 1st round . Then the rain came .

Started out sunday , no time trial put a 6.97 on it and hada decent light in the left lane drove it down with clean numbers and whopped it once rn a 6.99 and broke the other guy out . Round 2 . went red and ran it out 6.984 on a 6.98 . Had a blast . sorry for the novel write up .

Re: New project

My work schedule will be changing soon as i will be off shift and working days 4 - 10s . This will allow me to run a full season next year .

So i made the best pass ever in Ennis spinning (6.971) and have only been able to bring the motor up to 2000 rpm on the brakes , so i figured a new converter would help it out . I was on Bullet and saw a startup company called freakshow performance out of Abilene , Texas . Art Carr went out of busness and the guy in the back making the converters started his own venture building powerglides and converters from scratch . I had run one of his converters when they were selling them under the redneck labal on Ebay and had good luck with it . I called up and went through the usual list of questions and what i was looking for in a converter and what i was doing with the truck . Yesterday i pulled the th400 out for a freshen up to give the new converter a fresh start and will be testing next weekend for the X275 even on Nov 10th . I plan on running 7.0 index

I was running 7.0 index and it left good there and ran pretty close . I have footbrake race all year long and .4 pro tree had a stepp learning curve for me . I rnded up #2 qualifier with a 7.0103 . First round made a 1st to 3rd shift and waited for the guy to fender me , which he did . Stupid me not only missed the shift , but forgot to arm the nitrous system. When i went to drive around I had no spray . They are are running NMRA today and have a footbrake race . Wife is pissed right now but i am ......already loaded from last night so we will see.

Re: New project

Well , went a couple of rounds at NMRA/NMCA and ended up next to a dude with a 70 Mustang . He went .001 and 8 numbers over i was slower on the light and went 1 number over with a 7.08 on a 7.07 . Trailer time as i was already in hot water for testing friday night racing saturday and then sunday which was my mother-in-laws birthday . oops .

For an update . I pulled the drum / drum power assembly off and added the Mopar master cylinder . I am not real hhappy with it at this point . Seems like alot of pedal effort and not enuff travel . I will call Aerospace brakes monday and see what they say .

Re: New project

I used their master on both my Nova and the truck,, Actually on the truck I used Jeggs version but is the exact same as the Aerospace,, possibly same supplier of the casting?? (Don't know that for sure but wow are they identical)
Anyways
Nova is Willwood 4piston disks up front and Aerospace 'race' version disks in back,, truck is stock 70 GM truck MANUAL disks up front and Willwood 4 piston disks in the rear. It took some SERIOUS bench bleeding to get all the air out so I had a solid pedal. I had kida the same issues your talking about... somewhat mushy pedal, lots of travel and what seemed to be a LOT of foot effort to get less braking than I had with the stock manual m/c.

Aerospace told me to take it off and bench bleed it again. I argued that I had but did it anyways.... then I shut up because I had really good brakes afterwards LOL

The pedal effort was still a more compared to the old big bore stock m/c. But getting the air out made a big difference, and I got used to it real quick. Now I can make the first turnout with EASE coming down from 117+ in a 3550# truck.

One issue I had with the m/c.. be SURE the caps fit correctly and are tight. I lost one of the caps in a big wheelie, slopped hydraulic fluid all over the headers and thought I had a engine fire, what a smoke fest!!! Actually I probably don't want to know how close I really was to a mid-track fire! Anyways those plastic caps arent real secure,,, just check them once in a while.

I bench bled the crap ouyt of it then put it on the truck and added hoses to it back to the resevor . The pedel is firm . I also used my vacuum pump to pull the fluid through til it was almost perfect . The fluid that was coming out had a dark tint to it like a seal was wearing out .

Re: New project

Got this figured out . My pedal ratio was 4.65 to 1 . I bent the rod to square it in the hole and moved it up the pedal to create a 7 to 1 ratio . Much better .

Re: New project

Hey Marv , i took some pics of it today to give an idea what is going on . Here is the underdash shot of the areospace brake rod after being cut to length and bent to fit . You can see were i took a piece of plate and cut it to fit the 4 holes from the old booster and the 2 holes and rear of the new booster . I tried to offset the master to the side . I suggest just centering it .

I couldnt get the truck on the converter at all before . At 1800 it was pushng through . I didnt have enough leg to hold it . Now i can bring it up to 2500 . I typically leave at 2200 anyway . It hits the converter harder there .

Random interior picture , but i swapped the pro stick to a pro ratchet . With the new converter it like to pull wheelies . I have been paying more attention to driving than shifting and just smacking it from 1st to 3rd . This new shifter will fix that . Working on a shift noid set up .

Re: New project

You will like the ratchet,, just keep yur hand off the shifter at launch,,,
I learned,, when you start leaving hard,, the hand just sorta flies back and grabs a gear for ya. Actually hate to admit this but that was when I discovered my pile would be quicker with a glide...

I dont doubt it would be quicker and tamer with a glide , but with christmas and college it will be half next season before it is in the budget . Meaning buying a good glide . I could probably get by with a stock case 1.76 , but want a good one . If a deal pops up on one ill get it and deal with the wife after the fact .

Re: New project

Well the Summit wheels didnt work out . I finally had time to pull one of these out of the box and they are Chinese and heavy . Sent them back and ordered Billet specilties streetlites . Not much done today except swapped the passengerside rubber and driverside polly mount for solid mounts . I bought a polyurethane trans mount on the advice from my transmission guy .

Re: New project

This is what i ended up going with . The summit wheels ended up being built offshore and heavy . Every pound of unsprung weight is like 3 pounds of unsprung weight . This would be like adding 100 lbs to the truck . The new wheels are 15 x 4 2.25 backspace in front and 15 x 10 rear with 5.5 backspace in rear . 165/80R15 front tires and 28 x 10.5 x 15 M/T slicks 3055 S stiff sidewall . New lugnuts and tubes . Starting out next season with fresh rubber and hoping to not change anything .

Re: New project

New wheels . Slicks will be here next week . Billet specilties website says every pound of unsprung is equal to 8 pounds of sprung weight . So just the fronts are equal to 80 lbs .

Re: New project

Well , Marv got me thinking awhile back about the throttle cable set up i was using so i bought a solid kit . I used the Longacre kit . Worked pretty good . I also added a sort of toe hook to the pedal while i was modifiying it . Have a Jerry Bickle boot coming for it . Also had a Moroso aluminum water pump that i finally got around to putting on .

Re: New project

Took it out last night and got 3 passes in . First pass , spun 1.55 60' & throttle hung wide open . Nice pass though . Motor was full of fuel and coughed pretty bad on restart .

Second pass after ajusting the firewall , dropped 4 psi in front tires & 1 psi in rears was better 10.99 . I lifted after the 1/8th mark to make sure the throttle wasnt hung and rolled back in .

Third pass dropped another # in the rears and got back to were i left off last season on the fronts . .045 1.48 6.89 97.61 10.99 118.81 ............ I was a bit late on the leave and knew it when i left . It pulled a nice wheelie , but i think the power valve is hurt as it is loading up rich . Probably tear the quick fuel apart an hang the demon back on it .

Bought a Jaz Aluminum seat and cover and the material to install it . i'll be working on that this week .

Re: New project

Fresh meat

The QFT is off now . It has something wrong with it and i can't figure it out . My old Demon came out of the box , got torn apart and looked over , jets changed and reinstalled . Truck is running way better . Guess i'll send the QFT back off and have it gone through again .
