K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

I'm posting in an attempt to clarify GMs usage of the lower tailgate trim on CST model Jimmys and Blazer. Curious if only a 1972 model year feature or was present on other year CSTs or if possibly there was variation between St. Louis and Flint as regards usage.

Please post the MY of your CST, build month, and plant if possible.

The factory brochure for 72 muddies the water a bit as a sort of CST appearing K5 has the lower trim but is missing the tailgate band (and badges and chrome rear bumper) is pictured together with a CST that lacks the lower tailgate trim.

My March 1972 Flint CST has the lower trim as shown.

Also want to plug the K5 survivor thread - anyone with survivor K5s please contribute multiple interior/exterior pictures to aid in documenting how 1st gen K5s left GM: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=584788

Re: K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

The rear has to be the least photographed part of the exterior. He's an example of the lower trim on an original paint CST 1972 Flint Blazer that looks to have a March build date (nice Highlander Jason!): http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...5&postcount=66

1972 cst highlander, the side trim has been removed and holes welded, no evidence of that on the tailgate. It was delivered to the customer May 16th.

What determines it plant so I can give that info as well

Look for either an "S" for St. Louis or an "F" for Flint on the VIN...

Re: K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

Looks like it was built in Flint, and I don't know what I was saying in the first post, of course there is not sign of the lower trim being welded. It's still installed..

I had a wedding last night, and it's still morning. Haha

Re: K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

This is getting interesting - maybe the lower trim is 72 specific?

Thanks for posting guys, keep 'em coming. Pete

Here's a 1972 St. Louis Highlander I'm looking at for a possible resto and it has lower trim. Don't have build month yet - will check the POP

Re: K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

My 70 and 71 cst has the upper trim and the large woodgrain piece. Who knows exactly why they did what. Give you an example All 69 camaros are supposed to have a camaro emblem on the truck lid. When I went to restore my I found out probably half never had one installed

To clarify, do either CSTs have the LOWER trim on the gate below the woodgrain panel? Thanks, Pete

How was the lower trim affixed to the tailgate?

Re: K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

I have 1969 and 1970 original dealer brochures and there are no pictures with the lower trim on the tailgate. I have an article from Collectible Automobile magazine and it shows an original 1971 Blazer CST with the lower tailgate trim.

Re: K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

The 69 I have never had holes in the bottom of the tailgate for the clips. I actually ordered a NOS bottom trim piece because I thought mine was missing.

Pete, You know this! There is nothing muddy about this picture.
Its a base Blazer with the BX2 trim option. Like the pickups it had the upper and lower tailgate moldings and painted letters.

Re: K5 CST Tailgate Trim - Do You Have A CST?

Possibility might be if you got wood trim you got the Big wood grain Chevrolet if you got black you got the lower piece of tailgate trim. Other wise you have a single piece of woodgrain trim with all black trim

True. The confusion for me is more the seeming lack of the lower molding on the CST.

FWIW, the model selection brochure from January 1972 mentions upper not lower trim on the tailgate of a CST. Thus far we have examples of pre-72 CSTs without the lower tailgate trim. Perhaps the lower trim was a 72-only feature for BX2 or CST equipped models?
