What chance I will need a new ring gear and pinion?

Thinking about rebuilding my 12 bolt rear end and adding an Eaton posi. Wondering if those that have done it can chime in about whether or not they could reuse their gear set or if they were too worn to reuse and get a good contact pattern. I would like to reuse my 373, but I hate to get something apart and not have what I need to do the job.

While new would be the better way to go I have done it in the past on 9" ford rears with no problems.

Is it noisy now? Then likely the gear set is just fine.

Typically the gear set doesn't wear out like the rest of the axle parts. If the rearend is in good working order chances are the gear set is okay to use. I would suggest, since you will have the rearend apart, replacing your bearings and seals since they do wear and are a pain to change.

The rear end seems fine. No noise. I changed axles and wheel bearings and seals a few years ago. The differential is just the last unknown in the truck and I don't know if it has ever been rebuilt. I don't want to run it until it spins a bearing race in the case. I have replaced or rebuilt everything else in the truck.
