A roll pin fell out of my valve body
Well, I was installing a Transgo shift kit in my K20 th350 transmission. Everything was going smooth like it should for a simple job. I replaced a couple springs and was just cleaning off the valve body with some brake cleaner. When I flipped it over while spraying it a roll pin fell out. I looked at the ones I just replaced and they are still in there. I have been racking my brain and looking everywhere as to where it could have came from. I had to quit for the night and try again in the morning.
I know it can't be good and if I install the valve body something isn't going to work right. So.............has anybody ever had one fall out that easy? They are usually under spring pressure and shouldn't be falling out. If I can't figure it out and put it back together, I'm thinking I should buy a trans pan with a drain plug right now. Trans fluid is getting too expensive to waste. If I have to take it out again next week there will be some serious swearing coming out of my garage. I'm hoping after a half a nights sleep I may be able to see something this morning. I'm just throwing this out there in case somebody has a good tip on where a loose roll pin could have come from. TIA

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
OK, found it and it was one of those. One of those valves was a little sticky in the bore so the pin was not under enough spring pressure and fell out. Yesterday I was tired and aggravated and it was getting dark. That's when it is best to quit for the day and try again in the morning when you are well rested and have brighter light. thanks.
Now I'll see if I can take the stickiness out of it and get it to slide in smoothly. It isn't dirt and it isn't a burr, it just seems to be very tight clearance.

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
Those aluminum sleeves can be a little snug. After inserting the pin just use a pick to push the sleeve back tight on the pin

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
Yup, Scotth Brite and brake cleaner gets the job done. Kerosene would be cheaper.
It seems weird to take a trans pan off and not see a magnet in there. I don't even want to put it back together without a magnet. It's amazing that the parts stores don't sell trans pan magnets. I guess I'll wait for Amazon. I'm trying to caox a few more years out of this tranny and I don't think having metal floating around will help it do that.

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
There are magnets available.
One option among many is : Link: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ACDelco-...9&gclsrc=3p.ds Here is a picture of the Dimple in the pan for reference of the location. below is the tool you could use to do (Create that Dimple). . Link:https://www.harborfreight.com/25-pie...set-93539.html You could use your favorite glue (In moderation) for a little bit of security that the magnet would not move// I don't think it will be needed if you put the dimple in the pan You could buy a pan with and magnetic drain plug also. Hope this helps .

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
The Aluminum Sleeves/Bushings don't need to move freely in their bores, Like Bigdav said....Simply force the sleeve against the roll pin to keep it from falling out during assembly....Which is really only an issue when the trans is upside down on the bench/holding fixture.

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
You can put a drain plug in allso just drill a hole and get one of those dorman kits for this. I know what you mean about the oil I should of put my pan on with velcro lol

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
I didn't know that. I will look into it. Thanks. I have an aluminum pan with a drain that I bought years ago but the threads are messed up on it. I'm glad I checked that before I installed it. I may look into putting a drain in my stock pan. Then I get to thinking it could just be another place to get a leak.....or some prankster could drain my fluid on me. paralysis by analysis.

Re: A roll pin fell out of my valve body
I put them in mine and have not had any leaks ,they will leave about 1/2 qt of oil when drained.Sure beats a full pan when installed I cut a slot in the threads to get a little more out of the pan.
