changing 5-speed to 700R4

What is involved in changing from a '96 5- spd. to a '95 700r4? Can it be done without a lot of hassle?
Thanks

Is the 700R4 an ECM controlled auto? Since you say it's a '95 trans, I thouht '95's came with either an 4L60E or an 4L80E ECM controlled auto. If the 700R4 is not electronic, then possibly your current ECM will work with it if you can figure out the converter lock-up needs for the tranny. The ECM controls that function, and the ECM's for manual trannys drive an Upshift light and not converter lock-up. Possibly an EPROM from an earlyer year that used that tranny would work.
What ECM do you have?

tranny stuff

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sum...o/700R4p1.html , i found this helpful for making an R-4 lock-up the easy way in an older truck, they come in different configurations.

I was told it was a 700r4, but from looking at it, from what I can see anyway, it's not a 700r4. The auto is in a '95 behind a 4.3 and I want to put it in a '96, replacing a 5-speed, als behind a 4.3. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Your '96 is an OBD-II platform, which is an entirely different animal than '95 and earlyer. For '94-95, the computer used for an auto app is entirely different than one used for a manual app. Go to the library and lookup the PCM electrical diagrams for the manual trans apps and compare to the diagram for the auto trans apps. I found these in a reference manuals printed by Mitchell. Obviously, the manual trans did not use the cableing needed to connect to an 4L60E trans--maybe the cable is there? If not, you'll have to get one from a wrecking yard--or build it your self. The fabrication is not too bad, but the logistics (sourcing all the connectors, etc,) is. If the PCMs in '96 are the same for either app, then the swap may be practical, but would be time consuming with regard to the needed electrical hookups. I'd rebuild or replace the manual trans.
