1972 k5 Blazer hitch

Good morning. I've read some old posts regarding a hitch for a 1972 k5 blazer. Some decent input and I've ALMOST pulled the trigger and ordered one. Lots of measuring and lots of attempting to get schematics from manufacturers. However, I thought I'd put it out there and see if anyone has actually ordered one recentry and if so maybe a brand and part number? Ideally I'd like a class 4. The threes are a little light for my purpose. I pull a boat which maxes out at about 6000lbs. Yes I know I'm pushing what I can comfortably tow behind the blazer but, I only need to tow it twice a year abut 5 miles each way maxing out at about 40 mph. Once to put it in in the spring and once to pull it out in the fall. Oh, and I'd like the receiver to sit just below the license plate. Standard bumper. Thanks for any input and help.

Re: 1972 k5 Blazer hitch

I just ordered one from u haul last week. It said it's going to take 20 to 30 days to make it. The only other hitch that I know of is made by early classics and is hidden behind the license plate.

Others have used an 88 k30 hitch but I believe it has to be a k30 since the frames are narrower. I found a reese hitch that was for a 97 up Dakota that you could flip the mounting plates and it would have been close but I gave in and when uhaul.

Re: 1972 k5 Blazer hitch

The U-Haul Hitch is well worth the wait. Fits the frame good and mine is pretty high quality. No issues with it at all. I have pulled my 18 ft car trailer with, my dirt bike trailer and a pick up trailer filled with dirt and multiple other things.

I have the Early Classics behind the license plate hitch. Works well and I like that it's tucked up under.

Re: 1972 k5 Blazer hitch

I took a GM factory hitch off of a 1988 GMC Jimmy. Had to cut it down on both sides and re-weld it back up. It's been a good hitch and I've pulled some crazy heavy stuff with it, but I've never liked the way it looked on my truck because it hangs down so far. They hung down like that on the 80's model Suburban/Blazer/Jimmy. Anyway, I'll be ordering one like Keegan has from early classics. Not sure what the weight rating is but it's awesome that you can't see it from behind. Very cool.

Re: 1972 k5 Blazer hitch

Installed a Curt 14082 class IV receiver hitch 10,000 lb.that I purchased from summit racing. Really pleased with fit. Installation took a couple hours because you have to drill all 6-1/2"holes ..all grade 8 hardware comes with it. Lines up nice under license plate bracket. It was $159.00 with free shipping

bobshotrodblazer,

Now that is very cool. How did you come up with that? That part number shows to be for a F350 Ford or something???

Re: 1972 k5 Blazer hitch

I have the uhaul setup. Was about an hour install and works and looks good. I think I only drilled 2 holes if I remember right. It clears the gas tank for removal if that matters.

Re: 1972 k5 Blazer hitch

Except for drilling the 6 holes it went good . No issues with gas tank either.
I have a car lift so drilling wasn't bad.

I have the same uhaul hitch. Pretty straight forward install. You have to drill some holes and it comes with instructions.
