Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Was the Highlander option available in the 72 GMC? Did GMC call it something else? In the 72 GMC sales brochure (earlier post) it outlines you could get the plaid cloth inserts in the seat similar to the Highlander.

I have had discussions earlier in this thread on why my GMC Super Custom may have come with chrome bumper, trimmed pedals, Wood grain lower molding, tail gate band and bright trimmed side marker lamps from the factory. Did these options come on the "Highlander" package?

It is obvious that at some time point in time my truck's PO had the cloth replaced in the existing parchment scrolled vinyl bench seat. However in my SPID it lists "611 Custom Trim Combination" but none of my literature describes what option code 611 is. However in other threads there are a couple of posts where it has "611 Blue Plaid Trim" and there were blue plaid cloth inserts in those trucks. Would option code 611 be two different things?

Is it possible my Super Custom may be a Highlander or GMC equivalent? I have pics posted earlier in this thread.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

GMC didn't offer a Highlander pkg,but plaid seat was an option. Highlanders came with standard side lenses, the same as all other Custom Deluxes.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Do you think the plaid seat would have been included with the 611 option code on the GMCs???
Thanks

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Great info and trucks in this thread. I found a 72 GMC today in the junkyard and it is just a custom. It has been painted but it is in good shape. I have a question though. It has a painted front bumper with a chome grille. Would that be right on a 72. Also I guess it would have had painted hubcaps also. Here is a pic of the spid.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Most likely your 611 code is the plaid trim code. I have a pic of a 72 chevy spid with the plaid trim on it. I saw the truck today actually.
It is kind of hard to see but it says 613 avocado plad trim.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

I guess the 611 code is for the plaid seat option. I always considered doing a plaid seat in a GMC just to be different. But,I never realized it was possible to have an originalplaid seat GMC.

All grilles were chrome in '72. I asked what year was the last painted and it hasn't been answered. I am thinking '68,but maybe I've seen a '69? In '72 only Sierras and Sierra Grandes got chrome bumpers and hubcaps in as standard equipment. It almost seems more Super Customs came with optional chrome bumpers and hubcaps than not. That truck you looked at is one of those odd combinations. It got Deluxe two-tone,so upper and lower side trim, yet painted bumpers and hubcaps. It's not uncommon to see and I believe this would be dealers ordering trucks to have more flash yet sell for less than flashier trucks. Like creating an additional price level between a Custom and Super Custom.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Thanks for confirming this. Other threads have confirmed as well. So since my truck was likely born with this plaid fabric I just orderd 2 yards of it from SMS.
Thanks

Nice truck. It would be like a sierra or sierra grande then. Common to see custom sport truck on gmc spids. It looks to have a COPO posi front axle also. Very nice.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

I have a question about tilt cloumns. I know the tilt columns in a Chevy would have been painted black, but would a tilt in a GMC be black or body color?

I sure hope so, I do not want to have to have mine repainted.

Don't sweat it. You're good to go with black column tilt. Chevy & GMC did the same thing.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Great Thread!

My new to me Canadian '72 GMC 2500 Custom...

Built in Oshawa, Canada.
Fender Badges: 2500 Custom
Gauge Cluster: Painted Sandalwood with Plain Jane Knobs.
Glove Box Door: Painted Sandalwood without any Badge/Nameplate.
Pedals: Plain Jane Rubber.
Seat: Parchment Vinyl Scroll.
Moldings: None
Tailgate: Painted White surrounding GMC Letters without any Trim.
Bumpers: Painted White Front Bumper and optioned Rear Step Bumper.

Unsure of where it was sold out of (haven't sent away for the GM Canada History Pack for it yet).

Included a picture of Glove Box SPID and Interior.

Also, leh72super1500 I was curious about your SPID font, I have 2 Canadian trucks now (A '69 Chevy & '72 GMC) both fonts being the same on their SPID's (as is every other truck I've seen in the flesh). Might be reaching but what if the different font has anything to do with being a specially ordered individual customer truck (not like the specially fleet ordered ones with Special Paints Etc.) as I've seen those with the same font as mine but more of a single, non-business, 'one off' special order type variety?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Hello Canadian694x4
Thanks for your question regarding my SPID font. I have not posted on here in a while. There has been much discussion about my spid font on other threads on this forum. My truck was born with the 611 "Custom Trim Combination" that means it had the Highlander plaid seat cloth, parchment door panels and scrolled seat vinyl. Also my truck like yours had the sandalwood instrument cluster and glove box door. My best guess is that a previous owner (perhaps the original owner) did not like the combination sandalwood with the Hawaiian blue colors on the dash (can't say that I blame him), so he had the instrument cluster bezel replaced with a black one and the glovebox door repainted. There is evidence of the sandalwood paint underneath the black on the glove box door. So the original spid was likely replaced by a dealer typed spid. I did send away for the historical information from GM Canada and it was well worth the money. It confirmed all of the options and confirmed the matching engine number.

That's how my '72 K2500 is. But the Sierra Grande RPO shows as Z84 rather than YE9, so RPO matches bedside emblem
