Thumbs up Shaving a Auto tilt

As the title states. I'm going to shave a auto tilt to go in my ramp truck that has a 4 speed. It will be a little of everything. Welded and body filler depending on the area. Mostly welding I hope. I'll paint it after it's all done to hide the mistakes!

I have never done one before so any suggestions are welcome. It will be a learning experience I'm sure but it will be done!

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Shaving a Auto tilt

I didn't go to that extent but I did shave the shifter arm off. I did not weld, I used fiber strand!

Is this some kind of fiberglass?

It's just plain metal as far as I know.

Wink Re: Shaving a Auto tilt

Yes, I think i said it wrong it is Martin Senior fiber hair. You can get it at napa. It is a body filler but it has long strands of fiberglass in it. Sets up like a rock. The fiber strand gets rock hard to but it appears more like filler (you cannot see the fiberglass in it) I use the strand on my initial body work (rough work). Then I use light weight over it. The hair is better option for the column. You can use screen with hair over the top. Then use grinder to rough shap it. And regular filler over the top.

I've done what Rob has done in the past too. It used to be called tiger hair in the day.

Cool. I pick some up and work with it. Thanks. I was going to have my neighbor weld most of it but this may be much easier and I can do it myself.

Re: Shaving a Auto tilt

I would have probably completely disassembled it first to prevent shavings from getting into the bearings and causing potential shorts.

Shorts how???

I plan to blow it out good with air after wards plus I put foam down inside it while I cut it and grind it.
This want need the safety neutral switch. I used them to drill into the shifter tube to hold it in place. Works like a champ. I'll cut the lower lever off tomorrow night.

I found out today after welding didn't work the bowl is aluminum(first picture) and the rest is metal. So I cleaned it all up again and filled the openings with plumber's putty like I used on my steering wheels that I have re done. I will let it dry for a few days then sand it down and primmer it to paint. Going to paint it black.
I also used the safety neutral switch screw holes with long screws to secure the shift tube in place then I cut the bottom part off.

Got the rough sanding done. Now waiting on warmer weather to primmer it and final sanding. Then I'll paint it.

I got to thinking about it. The filler want have any pressure on it and it want have any stress so I just used what I had. This stuff gets hard but it is easy to work with.

I found a shift delete collar from a dump truck a while back, plan on using it on mine when I find a manual column.

Not sure I am following what your saying here?
When I pull the one out of the ramp it's for a 3 on the tree column shift.

Shift delete collar doesn't have the opening for the shift arm it's smooth all around.

Yes I understand I know this part.

This is what I was talking about. How will this bowl work for a manual column?
Are you trying to say for a 4 speed?

Inner shaft is the original. And the joint I bought online stainless steel I believe it is 3/4 DD to 36 spline to replace the factory joint.
