86 c10 street truck in the 10s?

I really like my heavy truck and carbed small block for nostalgia... But I wanna hang with these new mustangs and camaros... Have a friend who has a '13 mustang with a 5 speed stock block boss intake manifold CAI and somewhere between a 150-200 shot of nos... He went 7.1 in the 1/8th with a 1.4 60' and it locked him out of 3rd so his 1/4 was low 11... But enough ford bragging.. I want my 86 to do mid 10s and still be street friendly don't want to do it with a 15:1 race fuel only engine... Could this be done with a ls and a 4l80 and some nos? Has anyone done anything close? I'm running 8.9 in the 1/8th now @77mph trans is slipping bad

Re: 86 c10 street truck in the 10s?

Well your truck for one is about the same weight as the Mustang, but with a good deal more wind resistance. You could put the truck on a bit of a diet, and get rid of things it doesn't need. I would install a blazer gas tank to get some weight over the rear axle.

A 383 Vortec or 383 LT1 both can pound out some serious hp, and tq while keeping the carb. Both are capable of 425-450 while maintaining very good street manners. Plus they both use tradition sbc headers, ignition, and carbs. Manifolds can be adapted for the LT1. A staged or progressive 200-250 shot on either will get you well into the 11's. Maybe touching high 10's on better days.

A LS is a great choice too, but a 6.0 would be my choice if I wanted to use NOS to go fast.

The best part of the LT1 or Vortec is you could build it in stages as you need, and or how budget dictates. You could drop in a 4L80 or 4L65 right now, and save for the engine later. With out have to buy spacers for the tranny later, ditiching the stand alone tranny computer, or other bolt-ons you may already have.

Well. A th400 with a gear vendors overdrive. Some 4:11 gears. A big block 454 with a strong street build and a 300shot of giggle juice will do it. Add a four link and meats and you should be into the tens at least.

That's just being vague there. It's going to take 150 more hp to keep up with a truck over anything. Your looking at 12k in stuff to do it.

I need some sponsors lol I like the big block idea my dad keeps saying 502, my 2 year old likes to ride in the truck. So I don't want to go straight drag truck plus what's the fun in beating a 100% street car in a 100% race truck... This new ls and coyote technology is crazy...

Re: 86 c10 street truck in the 10s?

Do an LS swap and boost it. These new engines are capable of making over 500 with minor upgrades, 700 or more with the boost. No messing around with the juice. I have two buddies with the turbo'd trucks. Granted they are newer trucks, but Nelson performance can build you the harness.

Can I upload video from my phone on to here?

Cubic inches is the only way your going to keep street manners effectively. The other way you can do it is twin turbo sbc. Hell even a big block with just a single turbo will eat most anything for lunch. The giggle juice will just make sure it shows tail lights to all.

As for street driving. Spending some big $$$ on a tight fitting cage with removable side bars will make it more livable. Your pretty much going pro street here.

SB Siamesed exhaust aren't the best for turbo. Too much heat.

That being said my pile runs 12.0x's and will hold its own fairly well

LS with single turbo. 5.3s are cheap and plentiful. Local guy runs 5.3s with a garret in fox body ponycar. He is constantly running high 9's. Search youtube.

Yep, agreed.

It's a lot less than people think to build this set up.

This question opens a ton of discussions, factors like weight, traction, HP, torque, aerodynamics, suspension mods, a roll / crash cage. transmissions, rear ends, gearing.. and lets not forget brakes... a huge project grows out of a single thought. which depending upon the person might be totally feasible or a nightmare. the price tag alone will be in one word... Going fast is easy, going fast smartly isn't as easy, or cheap. I'm dating myself saying that. but let me add, watching a brake drum disintegrate n land on your windshield at 120 mph isn't as much fun at 45 as it was at 18.

Re: 86 c10 street truck in the 10s?

Gonna get my slipping th350 rebuilt soon just pulled the drive shaft... Maybe if I come out and pull a bolt every once in a while it will eventually hit the ground.. (Have a two year old and a wife who works and I work full time and don't have a shop so weather permitting it should be out soon) gonna get the slipping fixed and see what it does... It went 8.9 easing out of the hole on street tires and 8.9 on slicks on the floor no spinning

Re: 86 c10 street truck in the 10s?

5.3, custom grind cam, head studs, ls9 headgaskets and Borg Warner S475 or s480. That should get you in the 10s and still be very streetable. If you want to go even cheaper you can try it with an Ebay GT45 turbo, lots of them out there going low 9s in a car so 10s in a truck shouldn't be an issue.
There isn't much you can do in the aerodynamics department so put the truck on a diet and shed some lbs and move some of the weight from the front to the rear if possible.

I am going the 5.3/gt45 route when I return from Okinawa.
