shifter does not line up

My column shifter does not match my trans. When I shift the trans from drive to reverse. The column stops short. I have to pull back and sift just a smidge past it for it to go into gear. Is there a fix for this?

thanks
Chris

Re: shifter does not line up

If you look under the truck you will see the long rod that connects the column to the trans itself. There is a "barrel" that slips along that rod and is clamped with a bolt.

Loosen the bolt. Manually put the trans in N (under the truck) and then the shifter in N (in the cab) and then clamp the bolt back down (under the truck).

Re: shifter does not line up

Once you get the shifter and trans relationship where you want it: if you have to adjust the needle indicator that is done by sliding a clip on the bowl of the shifter base.

Remove the closeout panel on the dash and the cluster bezel. You should see a string operated Rube Goldberg device that moves the needle. At that point you should see the clip; move that clip to get the indication where you want it.

Re: shifter does not line up

there might also a plastic half sphere shaped washer that the rod pivots off of... my 87 has that part, a flat washer and a spring to keep some tension on that linkage so it pivots smoothly.
